Prerequisites: Understand that subtracting is taking apart and taking from

Essential Questions: How can you use pictures to compare and subtract?

Materials and Equipment: 3 Chairs to model word problem, ebook, and student edition.

Instructional Objective:Students will be able to compare pictorial groups to understand


subtraction. Students will use vocabulary words fewer, more and compare to describe
groups.

Instructional Procedures: List instructional strategies and learning experiences that are in
alignment with the objective(s). Include information about what teaching strategies you will use
to engage students. Include information about what type of technology, manipulatives, etc. you
will use to facilitate students meeting the objectives.

● Before: Gathered as a large group demonstrate there are 5 children and 3 chairs. How
many chairs do I need? Let students share their thoughts (turn and talk with partner).
Have a few share their strategy for figuring out how many chairs. Do you know you
just subtracted? Tell the students, today we are going to use pictures to compare and
and subtract. Refer to pg. 93 9 Brown dogs and 5 bowls problem. Model the steps to
solve the problem asking What two numbers are we comparing? How can you tell how
many brown dogs need a bowl? What subtraction sentence can you use to describe
the problem? Tell students we are going to go back to our desks to try a few together.
● During: As a large group complete pg.94 Model and draw and #1. Then pg. 96 #s 6,8
and then 7. Use #6 and 8 to help show that the amount fewer and more will be the
same number.
● After: Students complete pg. 95 independently.
Assessment: Teacher will check in with students to see their work on the independent practice
page. Listen for language such as compare, fewer, and more.

Differentiated Instruction: Challenge students who complete their independent practice early to
try problem 5. Manipulatives are available to support students in need.
