Description Bulletin 700 Type N range of 2-8 pole relays and Bulletin 700 Type NM range of 2-6 pole relays with convertible contact cartridges provide a complete line of 300V NEMA rated devices. ‘Type N relay line includes electrically held relays (Type N), permanent ‘magnet latched relays (Type NM) and various accessories such as pneumatic timing units (Type NT), ete. The compact construction of these relays greatly reduces relay panel size and simplifies panel layout, wiring and maintenance. All relays feature convertible contact cartridges which can be arranged in any normally open (N.O.) and normally closed (N.C.) combination. Relays can be manually operated by pressing the red bar at the center of the nameplate; the red bar also gives visual indication of relay operation. Both Type N electrically held and Type NM latch relays have a pressure molded coil and twin spanner contacts. Coil Replacement for AC Type N and DC Control Relays 1. Insert a screwdriver tip into the slot between coil terminals. 2. Using the screwdriver as a lever, pry the coil unit upward. 3. Grasp the yoke and armature assembly between the thumb and fingers as the coil unit is removed from the relay so that these parts do not separate and fall. 4, Assemble spring and armature to replacement coil with step on armature adjacent to coil terminals. 5. Holding armature in place, position yoke against shock pad on rear of coil with ear on sideplate nested in recess in coil. 6. Slide coil unit into the mounting base. 71, Press firmly until unit locks into place. Should the coil inadvertently be replaced without the armature and yoke in place, it will be necessary to remove the entire contact structure from the mounting frame to free the coil. Type NM Direction of coll unt side ‘poly steady downward pressure with palm of hand at indicated points Use large screwdriver ‘as lever 1. Disconnect the two coil leads. A .109 Allen-wrench fits the terminal cap screws. 2. Loosen the four captive screws that secure the rear deck assembly to the mounting frame assembly. 3. Lift off the rear deck assembly. 4. Apply steady downward pressure to the coil unit and simultaneously insert the tip of a large screwdriver beneath the coil unit, to the right of the release lever and against the mounting frame assembly. See illustration above. 5. Using the screwdriver as a lever, slide the coil unit upward and out. The coil along with the magnet armature, spring, yoke and release lever remove as a unit. 6. Holding down the magnet assembly with the palm of one hand, unlatch by pressing upon the release lever. The magnet armature, spring, release lever and yoke are now free and can be removed from the c ‘To Reassemble: 1. Insert the magnet yoke in the replacement coil. 2. Insert the coil unit into the mounting frame assembly and press firmly until the unit “locks” in place. 3. Reassemble the release lever, spring and armature. The armature must be assembled with chamfered comer adjacent to the release lever. 4. Press armature to the sealed position to hold release lever and spring in place. 5, Reassemble the rear deck assembly. 6. Refer to Normally Closed Coil Clearing Contact Adjustment. (See page 6.) Normally Closed Coil Type NM neering ae Adjustment of the normally closed coil clearing contact is necessary after jjustment for replacing operating coil, yoke and armature assembly, rear deck assembly or and DC Control Relays the normally closed coil clearing contact itself. 1. Expose the normally closed coil clearing contact cartridge (yellow) by removing the cover assembly or the front deck assembly, if present. 2. Latch the relay by pressing the manual latch (red vertical bar) Disconnect the external connection to terminal 2, or check that the external circuit is open. Connect an ohmmeter or continuity indicator across the terminals of the yellow cartridge. A .035 Allen-wrench fits the adjustment screw located in the center of the yellow contact cartridge. 4, ‘Turn screw counterclockwise, if necessary, until continuity indicator shows that contact is closed. 5. Slowly tum screw clockwise until “contact touch” occurs. Then tum screw one additional turn clockwise to establish a .015 inch (AC) or .031 inch (DC) contact gap with the armature latched. The adjustment screw is self-locking and does not require sealing. 6. Reassemble the front deck assembly, if used, and the cover assembly. 7. Reconnect the two coil leads and the extemal connection to terminal 2 if these have been disconnected. Adding a Front Deck Type N and NM Assembly to AC and DC Control Relays ‘A front deck can be added to any single deck relay. 1. Remove cover by loosening the two captive screws, 2. Attach front deck to single deck relay. 3. Replace cover on front deck. Adding Contacts to AC and DC Control Relays Converting Contacts on AC and DC Control Relays | ‘Type N and NM ‘The single deck relay must have all four contact locations occupied with either a contact cartridge or a filler cartridge. When adding contact, cartridges, remove and discard the filler cartridge. With double deck relays, cartridges may be added to any vacant positions in the front deck. Type N and NM Normaly Closed "emia T=) > Nemaly Open ead Terminal Tb ‘To convert contact cartridges: 1. Remove cover by loosening the two captive screws. 2, Remove the two terminal screws of the cartridge to be converted and lift ‘out the contact cartridge. 3. Tum the contact cartridge over, set it back in the relay, and replace the screws. 4, Replace cover. ‘The terminal tab on each end of the contact cartridge indicates the contact arrangement. All contact cartridges have the same easy convertibility. Operation of AC Control Relay Type NM Latch Circuit - Power to the latch circuit must be maintained for a minimum of 75 milliseconds. Unlateh Circuit - Power to the unlatch circuit must be maintained for a minimum of 50 milliseconds. ATTENTION: External circuit connections must not be made to the contact terminals to which the black and blue coil wires are attached. These contacts are associated with internal circuit requirements. ATTENTION: The “Latch” and “Unlatch” contacts must never be closed at the same time. Energizing both circuits simultaneously will cause damage to the relay. ‘When the latch pilot device is “closed” and maintained, current flows through the controlled avalanche rectifier and into the coil in the direction shown by the arrow, creating the force which picks up the armature, As the armature latches, the special late break normally closed coil clearing contact opens interrupting the coil current; the armature is held in the latch position by the permanent magnet field. no onto Supp Col Ceang | {cot )-dI [vin ace — \ 3,4 : Black Wire | =... . Resistor a ‘When the unlatch pilot device is “closed”, current again flows in the coil, but in the opposite direction, so as to oppose the permanent magnet field, and then passes through the controlled avalanche rectifier. The armature unlatches, and as it does, the normally open coil clearing contact opens to interrupt coil current. The series resistor limits the current flow to the required unlatch level. Operation of DC Control Relay Type NM ATTENTION: The “Latch” and “Unlatch” contacts must never be closed at the same time. Energizing both circuits simultaneously will cause damage to the relay. With the relay in the unlatched position, the latch circuit is energized when DC voltage is applied between terminals 2 and 4. The armature moves to the latched position and is held there by the permanent magnet. The normally closed coil clearing contact opens and intérrupts the latch coil current. With the relay in the latched position, the unlatch circuit is energized when DC voltage is applied between terminals 3 and 4. The armature moves to the unlatch position and the unlatch coil current is interrupted by the normally open coil clearing contact. Black Wire Adding a Timing Unit to a Basic Relay Changing Timing Mode from On-delay to Off-delay Front Cover Remains on Relay To assemble the units together, mount the timer unit on the front of the basic relay and tighten the two captive screws that are supplied with the timer. No changes are necessary to the basic relay. Type NT = Terminal =) Tab Front Gover 1, Loosen two captive screws (A) on the die cast plate, 2. Remove the die cast plate from the relay and rotate 180° 3. Replace the die cast plate in rotated position and tighten screws. ‘Type of operation is indicated at the top of the die cast plate. Converting Contacts Type NT To convert contact cartridges of the timer unit: 1, Remove the contact front cover by loosening the two captive screws (B ~ see page 11). 2, Remove the two terminal screws and lift out the contact cartridge. 3. Tur the contact cartridge over, set it back in the relay, and replace the screws. 4, Replace contact front cover. ‘The terminal tab on each end of the contact cartridge indicates the contact arrangement. ATTENTION: Do not remove unused contact cartridges from the timing unit. Faulty operation could result. Timing unit cartridges are not interchangeable with the front deck contact cartridge Cat.
