ITALY

Italy is a member of the European Union. Its territory, with its capital in Rome, is
divided into twenty regions.
Italy is located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, in southern Europe.
The Alpes extend almost entirely through Italian territory with a length of 1,200
km.
Most of Italy corresponds to the Mediterranean forest biome, also present are
the temperate hardwood forest, between the Po valley and the Apennines, and
the temperate coniferous forest in the Alpes.
Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the national economy. Rome,
the capital, is one of the most visited destinations in the world. The Colosseum
of Rome, is one of the most visited places in Italy.
Also, the religious and cultural tourism generated by the Vatican City, with
places as visited as the Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica or the Sistine
Chapel.
Also famous Italians such as Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, Michelangelo or
Leon Battista Alberti have made important contributions in biology, architecture
or engineering.
