The debate I witnessed proved that history and art would coexist inevitably. Although the side that history and art are not related did prove some strong points, in the end the opposition won the debate. Generally, art is defined in this art appreciation class as the generation of new ideas which already reveals the dependency of art on the time frame. How can one say that the art is new if it the person does not have any concept of what was in the past. If we take a look back at the most renowned artworks, they are usually the revolutionary ideas due to the time and condition that the artworks were born into. The constant generation of something new through art is what makes art continually developing and progressing and these key characteristics in an art is what makes it a good one. An example in our art appreciation class would be the artwork of Marcel Duchamp: Fountain. It was highly regarded during that time period because it was revolutionary compared to what was seen as art during that time. It presented a new idea that challenged our minds to think of the intention of Duchamp’s message. He was a credible artist due to his past works so it would be a norm to appreciate his next works. But he presented one that was entirely different from the usual which we can only know by looking back at the past or back at history.
