Synopsis

Solomon Northup, a free African-American man who works as a violonist in Saratoga Springs, New York,
was kidnapped by two white men, Hamilton and Brown who pretended to offer him a job as a musician
if he will travel with them to Washington DC. When Northup was transferred to New Orleans, the slave
trader named him Platt, which means "a runaway niger from Georgia". They sell him to William Ford,
which later due to a conflict with another plantation worker, sells him to Edwin Epps. There, he met
Patsey, a slave who was molested and raped by Epps.

Maganda ang Maputi vs. Maganda ang Kayumanggi

Filipino movies has this value of Maganda ang Maputi wherein the protagonist or leading characters in
the film mostly have fair skin. The leading actress should be an ideal girl because they believe that it will
contribute a lot to the success of the movie. In the movie 12 Years A Slave, it is obvious that they don't
consider White as beautiful as the leading characters were mostly Black Americans. Well, maybe because
the movie is based on the true story that's why they make it near from reality. But still, many foreign
movies starred Black Americans. They have the value of Balck is beautiful. For example, the leading lady
of Peter Parker or Spider-Man in the recently released movie Spider-Man: Homecoming named Laura
Ruth Harrier is a Black American but still the movie is a big hit because not all movie watchers based
their choice of watching the movie in the actors and actresses, the delivery of the message and the
entertainment it brought to the viewers matters the most sometimes.

Sadly, we, the Filipinos, always consider that Westerners are superior to us in all ways. How can they
create movies patronizing the norms of the physical beauty of other nations or race? Why not appreciate
our own beauty since it is ours? We're Kayumanggi but we don't act as one.

Masaya ang May Palabas vs. Masaya ang Palabas na May Laman.

Some Filipino movies are like black coffee. Pure and without any blend. Sometimes there are no twists.
Viewers can already predict what will happen next even the movie is just yet beginning. Just only to say
that there is a movie and that the Actors and Actresses can handle everything. But sometimes, there are
Filipino movies that are like Creamy Latte. There is a twist in the story. Not only focus on drama, comedy,
tragedy and horror. Like the movie Everything About Her, Starting Over Again and Way Back Home. Those
movies have blends and twists and does not only focus on a one particular situation.

The movie 12 Years A Slave is like a frappuccino. It talks about family, friendship, obssession, rights and
freedom. It's not a movie for nothing. It inspires, awaken our blind eyes, and make us realize how being
free is important. The movir has a new genre that captures the interest of the viewers and it is also
helpful that the movie is based on reality.

Mabuti ang Inaapi vs. Mabuti ang May Sariling Isip at Gulugod

The movie 12 Years A Slave has also the value of Mabuti ang Inaapi just like some Filipino Movies. Maybe
because how can they oppress you if you know how to fight. But sometimes, it is a cliche value in many
movies where good person are always being oppressed. But, the Teleserye Wildflower of Maja Salvador
has the value of Mabuti ang May Sariling Isip at Gulugod because the protagonist acts as a heroine and
villain at the same time.

12 Years A Slave has also the value of Mabuti ang May Sariling Isip at Gulugod because the protagonist,
Solomon or Platt, still fight although he's being oppressed. He fights back because he knows that he has
the rights to because he is a free man.

Maganda ang Daigdig vs. Gaganda Pa ang Daigdig

The Filipino movies has this value of Maganda ang Daigdig because most of the ending of the movies are
happy ending. That the problem has being solved in just a snap without applying it in a real life situation.
The movie 12 Years A Slave has this value of Gaganda Pa ang Daigdig because the ending was not
exaggerated.

Reaction

The Film is based from a true story, that captures my attention when the movie starts to play. I'm very
much aware that the protagonist and another important characters on the movie were Black Americans
and I wonder why but when it is said that the movie is based from a true story, that definitely answers
my question. Why would they star white Americans if it is based from reality where the persons who
were abused were black Americans? Of course they'd rather choose characters whom perfectly fit in the
role. A really brilliant idea of the writers and directors because they do everything to make the movie
near from reality disregarding if other people will not going to watch it. That's one of a good
characteristic of American or Foreign movies because they feature real story that make sense and does
not only make a story that is far from reality. Although some does. Every scene in the movie is surprising
and intense. I cannot predict what will happen next.

The actors in the movie were good and perfectly fitted the roles given to each. Their portrayals and acts
were unquestionable and well done and added intensity and excitement to the movie.

Realizations hit me while watching the movie. That having freedom is one of the most important thing
among all. Without it, we're nothing but an individual who can be manipulated and conteolled by those
who are powerful than us. Freedom is a treasure that everybody should obtain. I also realized how lucky
I am being free and being who I am because I don't experiene such things shown in the movie.
