ART IN INDIA
4 YES IAM KATHPUTLIWHAT IS KATHPUTLI?
Kathputli is a join of two rajasthani language
words Kath meaning wood and Putli meaning a
doll which has no life . Kathputli means « puppet
which is made entirely from wood. However it is
made out of wood, cotton cloth and metal wire.
Puppelty is a very ancient art form, thought to
have originated about 4000 years ago. Puppets
have been used since the earliest times to ani-
mate and communicate the ideas and needs of
human societies.
ee i aa Le,
‘A puppet is one of the most remarkable and in-
genious inventions of the man, The traditional folk
Media in india are very popular among the rural
masses. The Puppetty is one of the traditional art
form which is used as an effective medium of en-
tertainment and communication.
TYPES OF PUPPETRY
The State has many ventiiloquists and puppeteer.
Professor Y.K. Padhye was the first Indian ventrilo+
dences of the earliest puppetry come from the|
Indus Valley civiisation where the arheologists:
have unearthed teracotta dolls with detachable
heads dating 10 3200 B.C, along with teracota
maniviatable animals.

In england, puppets were known by the
tury and, during the civil war, when theatres were
closed, puppet theatre enjoyed a period of un-
surpassed popularity. By the early 18" century it
was a fashionable entertainment for the wealthy,
and in the late19" century England's marionette.
troupes, considered to be the best in the world,
toured the globe with their elaborate produc-
tions.
Ventriloquism, or ventrloquy, is an act of stagecraft in
which a person (a ventriioquist) changes his or her
voice so that it appears that the voice is coming from
elsewhere, usually a puppeleered prop, known as a
“dummy”. The act of ventrioquism is ventlloquizing, and
the ability to do so is commonly called in English the|
bility to “throw” one’s voice.
One difficulty ventriioquists face is that alll the sounds that they make
must be made with lips sightly separated. For the labial sounds, v, b,
Pp, and m, the only choice is to replace them with others. A widely
parodied example of this difficulty is the "gottle o' gear’, from the re-
uted inability of less skilled practitioners to pronounce “bottle of
beer’. If variations of the sounds th, d, t, and n are spoken quickly, it
can be difficult for listeners to notice a difference.
