Break-out Title/Topic: Heteronormativity Resources Time
Bridge-in:
Today, we are going to complete a questionnaire about being heterosexual. If you are
not heterosexual, that is of course okay and I would like you to fill out the
questionnaire anyways so you can observe the patterns. You will not have to disclose
your sexual orientation to anyone or put your name on the sheet and no one will see 1
your answers. N/A minute

Does anybody have an idea of what heteronormativity is?

Learning Objective:
To allow the students to see how subjective sexual orientation is and to help them
understand how exactly heteronormativity is and how it can affect and discriminate
someone who is LGBT. Moreover, the exercise can help the students gain some
empathy for others and promote acceptance. 1

Participatory Activity:
The students will fill out a 10-question questionnaire that possesses questions that
non-straight individuals often get. Such as, “What do you think caused you to be
heterosexual?” or “When and how did you first decide you were heterosexual?”

Post-Assessment:
I will ask the students how answering the questionnaires made them feel and
hopefully gain responses that it made them confused/unsure of how to answer the
questions. I will then ask the students if any of the questions sounded familiar? And 5
where they may have heard them before. N/A minutes
Summary:
After hearing the students answers I will explain to them that this questionnaire was
intended to help heterosexual individuals understand the incidents LGBT individuals
undergo and the way they are spoken to/questioned. The quiz is essentially
heterophobic and demonstrates the prejudice and biases against LGBT people. Things, 3
heterosexual individuals do not have to deal with. N/A minutes
