Lesson Idea Name: Macromolecules Video

Content Area: Biology
Grade Level(s): 9th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
SB1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze the nature of the relationships between
structures and functions in living cells.
c. Construct arguments supported by evidence to relate the structure of macromolecules
(carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids) to their interactions in carrying out
cellular processes.
(Clarification statement: The function of proteins as enzymes is limited to a conceptual
understanding.)
Technology Standard Addressed:
2. Communication and collaboration
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and
formats

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

The technology tool used for this lesson will support all students through helping them further their content
knowledge through using interactive technology. This activity may help reach the three goals of UDL
principles in the following manners:
Action and Expression: Students will use means of technology to express the information that they know in
an interactive way. This type of activities will provide the instructor with more details about what the
students already know and what they need to learn more in depth.
Engagement: This activity is very engaging because it allows students to create their own video based on
macromolecules.
Representation: This allows students to represent the knowledge that they learned in multiple ways. Through
the ways students create the videos, these could be used to help other students study the material.
Lesson idea implementation
In this lesson, teachers will be walking the classroom helping students, individually, with the assignment.
Students will be actively working to create content and film a video about the four macromolecules in a
manner related to a menu from their favorite restaurant. They will analyze the item and report on which
macromolecules are present, etc. The project will be introduced towards the end of the unit to culminate
what we have done. It will take students approximately three in-class days to complete this project.

MultiMedia Tools

Student learning will be assessed using a rubric which seeks to understand student’s knowledge on the topic
of macromolecules and their creativity in expressing that knowledge in video format. To extend this lesson,
students can connect the number of macromolecules in each of the meals that are consumed to the amount
calories and how someone might be able to decrease a certain molecule to help lose or maintain weight. I will
provide feedback to students about their work through using a rubric with written comments.
Importance of technology:
Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to this project because it is the outlet in which students will
express their knowledge. The project could be completed without this technology, but the features such as
creative design and the use of computer-aided resources would be lost.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
One of the main concerns with using technology in the classroom concerning Internet safety would be
students misuse of the technology. To minimize risks to students/myself as the teacher I will work to educate
students primarily on how to search the web for credible sources, and appropriate websites to be viewed
while using a school computer. To alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, I will follow the rules and
regulations set forth by the school and district when designing this project and finally, to maintain Acceptable
Use policies, in accordance with citing, students will have worked on that in their English class and I will work
with students to exhibit the best practices of acceptable use.
Reflective Practice:
I think this could impact student learning positively because of its connection to the real world, students are able to
analyze food for their macromolecule content. Further extending this project would be an opportunity for students to
analyze meals from their favorite restaurant and recount on the macromolecules in there and possibly propose a
scenario for a person that wants to lose weight, how might eating certain macromolecules and decreasing others may
help.
