Tracing, Cutting & Gluing Lesson Plan

Standards
● 9.1.V.K.A1 Know and use basic elements of visual arts
● 9.1.V.K.B1 Use a variety of materials to create a work of art

Essential Question
● How can we trace, cut, and glue to make hand turkeys?

Objectives
● Students will understand how to trace objects with the craft of tracing their hands
to make it look like a turkey
● Students will use scissors properly to cut out what they have traced
● Students will recognize that gluing items together means that they will stick and
stay together
● Students will show how to properly use all art materials properly so that no
injuries occur

Materials
● Large brown construction paper
● Pre-cut, leaf-like construction paper (red, green, orange & yellow)
● Black Marker
● Pencils
● Child-friendly scissors
● Large glue sticks
● “Hand Turkey Checklist” hand-out

Procedures
● Introduction
○ Today we will be doing an art project that has three major steps. Those
include tracing, cutting, and gluing. Those three components are skills that
you all will be using throughout your time here in school. Because it is
November and getting close to Thanksgiving, we will be making hand-
turkeys!
● Active Learning Strategies
○ Ask - What materials do you know of that we use to trace objects? What
are some items that you have traced before?
○ Look For - pencils, pens, crayons, markers
○ Ask - What materials do you know of that we use to cut objects? What are
some items that you have cut before?
○ Look For - scissors, kitchen utensils
○ Ask - What materials do you know of that we use to glue objects? What
are some items that you have glued before?
○ Look For - glue, rubber cement

● Sequence of Learning
○ Hand out “Hand Turkey Checklist” worksheet and review the steps
that are necessary for students to complete in order for their hand
turkeys to look neat
○ Tracing - Discuss that we need a pencil and the brown construction paper
in order to begin tracing our hand
■ I do - I will demonstrate how to place my left hand on the
construction paper to trace because I am right-handed. Tell
students that they should always have their pencils in their
dominant writing hand. I will put my pencil where it touches my left
hand on the paper and follow around my hand until the lines meet
■ We do - I will guide students to do as I just demonstrated with
placing my hand on the paper. They will show me where they will
trace before they begin
■ You do - The students will then begin to trace their hands at their
own pace while I facilitate the room
○ Cutting - Discuss that we need their traced hand on paper and child-
friendly scissors in order to begin cutting out the hand-turkey
■ I do - I will demonstrate how to properly hold scissors in my
dominant hand. The students will see how my thumb goes into the
smaller hole and my pointer, middle, and ring fingers to in the larger
hole. After they see how my fingers are set, I will show the motion
of cutting. It will be a slow and gentle motion to ensure safety. We
will go over that cutting is a keep-to-self activity and that the sharp
edges should be pointed away from your person and not towards a
neighbor
■ We do - The students will follow my direction as to how to properly
hold scissors. After they can show me that they are safe with
operating scissors, they can go ahead and cut out their traced
hands on the construction paper
■ You do - The students will cut out their traced hand and throw the
extra scrap paper away in the trash can
○ Gluing - Discuss that we need a glue stick and the pre-cut, finger-shaped
colored construction paper in order to begin gluing the pieces together to
get a colorful turkey
■ I do - I will demonstrate how to use a glue stick by showing the
students that they only need a small amount of the glue stick
showing in order for it to work. I will put glue on the fingers from the
hand I cut out and stick on the colorful leaf-like feathers
■ We do - I will ask the students to follow the steps that I just
completed. They will only glue one finger for this step in the
process to show me that they understand how to manage the glue
stick
■ You do - The students will repeat the step that they took to glue the
first finger onto the hand with the exception of the thumb
○ Finishing Touches - I will allow the students to trigger their creative
minds by allowing them to use the black markers to make a face on the
turkey. I will not demonstrate this step but will show them what mine looks
like as the final product

● Summarizing Strategy
○ After their turkeys are completed and their scrap paper is cleaned up, the
students will sit at their respective tables and answer the following
questions with each other:
■ What item did we trace today?
■ Look For - our hands
■ What item did we cut today?
■ Look For - the paper where we traced out hand
■ What items did we glue today?
■ Look For - feathers that went on the turkey
○ When they are finished discussing the answers in their small groups, I will
instruct them to sit on the carpet so that we can answer the recap
questions in a large group

● Evaluation
○ I will ask them to write their names on their turkeys and turn them into me
so that I can assess how well they followed directions for the craft.

Assignments
● If students have an art set at home, encourage them to practice tracing, cutting,
and gluing on their own. Give them options such as using paper to make a
mosaic piece or to recreate their hand turkeys for their parents. As it gets close to
winter, ask them to trace circles, cut them out, and glue them together to make a
snowman.

Special Considerations
● Early Finisher
○ Students who finish early will keep their hand turkey at their seat and pick
a book off of the bookshelf to read. They will be instructed to find and pick
out words that begin with the letters of the week (W and M) and find sight
words that they already learned.
● Special Accommodations - Student who is struggling
○ If a student is struggling, I will direct my attention towards that student. I
will remind him or her of the directions I gave and ask them to repeat them
back to me. Once I feel that they understand, I will ask them to carry out
the tasks step-by-step. I will slow the class down a notch for this student
so that they do not feel left out or left behind
