Once you have determined your 5 learning styles, write a brief summary about each of the
five, and reflect upon how knowing a student's (specifically, an ELL
student's) learning styles could be a distinct advantage, especially during the student's
potential transition to a new school & environment. For each of your
5 learning styles (pretend they belong to the student), describe what types of
interaction/instructional strategies/methods you might use to be as effective as possible.

5 Learning Styles:
I am visual learner because I have great visual modes like studying pictures, reading diagrams,
and graphs. It would give English language learners an advantage if a teacher knew they were a
visual learner because the teacher could display pictures of certain words they do not understand
so they can understand it through visuals. For example, if the teacher was saying the word dog
but the English language learner did not understand, the teacher could then hold a picture of a
dog up and the student will understand what she/he is saying through the display of pictures. A
teacher could do this by holding up different pictures or making PowerPoints with pictures and
the word with it.

In addition, I am an applied learner. I prefer seeing real objects and situations. Real-life examples
help me understand different concepts. It would help an English language learner if a teacher
knew this because the teacher can start relating different topics to real world scenarios. For
example, in math if a teacher was teaching addition, the teacher could relate it to counting the
number of markers and crayons in the classroom and adding the markers and crayons together. I
could simply do this by finding things around the classroom to relate to the topics I am teaching
in class.

I am a verbal learner as well. I prefer learning through verbal and language skills. It would give
English language learners an advantage if a teacher knew they were a verbal learner because a
teacher could vocalize his or her lessons more. For instance, teachers may usually teach through
PowerPoints or assigning readings. If a teacher knew this, they could try vocalizing their
readings and PowerPoints instead of assigning it for homework.

Next, I am a social learner. I prefer to work directly with my classmates and instructors. I am
people-oriented and enjoy interacting with others. It would help an English language learner if a
teacher knew this because the teacher can pair the English language learner up with another
student. This will also help the English language learner feel comfortable if they are in a new
school. Giving the English language learner a partner will help them feel more comfortable in a
new setting. The teacher can start doing more group work and pair sharing so the child can learn
better and feel more comfortable.

Lastly, I am a pragmatic learner. I am practical, logical and systematic. I like to follow a set of
directions when completing a task. It would give English language learners an advantage if a
teacher knew they were a pragmatic learner because the teacher can always give the English
learner a set of directions to follow. Teachers may be used to letting students use their
experiences as directions, but knowing this will tell the teacher to give out written directions to
help the English language learner understand the material. With this knowledge, the teacher
should write out the directions and this will make sure the English language learner is on task.
