TEST No1

PROBLEM 1. A 10m thick layer of compressible clay is located between two sand layers so that it drains
at top and bottom. The coefficient of consolidation (Cv) is 0.043m²/day. A fill of 5m of soil with total unit
weight of 18 KN/m³ is placed over a wide area at the surface of the upper sand so that the stress
distribution can be considered uniform with depth. This fill takes 60 days to build.

a) Find the percentage of total compression of the clay layer at times of 15,30,45 and 60 days after
the start of construction.
b) Plot the percentage of compression versus time from 0 to 600 days
c) Find excess pore pressure at the center of the clay layer just after the fill has been completed
(I.e., at 60 days after start of construction)
