ABSTRACT
ADDICTION OF ELECTRONIC GADGETS TOWARD STUDENTS’ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE

This study aims to determine the relationship of Electronic Gadgets

Addiction towards the academic performance of SHS High School students who are
addicted with electronic gadgets from Mactan National High School for the school
year 2019-20204.) Based on the findings, what particular activity can be proposed?
After the data have been tabulated, the following findings are hereby revealed: 1.)
The top 5 most frequently used gadgets are mobile phone with a frequency of 25 or
83.33% of respondents. The internet accessibility used by the students are data which
has the most number of user, followed by wi-fi and hotspot. On the other hand, the
frequency of usage of electronic gadgets among all students, 3-5 times a day appear to
be the most frequent usage of gadgets Lastly, the number of hours which has a huge
effects towards student academic performance is more than 9 hours per day.2.)The
academic performance of SHS students of Mactan National High School rely mostly on
81-85% General Point Average (GPA) with a total of 15 or 50% of the respondents. 3.)
Researchers found out that most of the students that has lower grades prove that
frequency of usage and number of hours a student has spent in electronic devices has
significant relationship in their academic performance based on the result, students
used more than 9 hours while few got 91-95 grades in the first semester. 4.) The
particular activity that can be proposed is seminar regarding the addiction and effects of
electronic gadget towards students' academic performance. In this way, students will be
provided with information and enough awareness on the possible consequences of
over-usage of electronic gadgets. This means that the usage of electronic gadgets has a
significant relationship towards the academic performance of Grade 12 SHS students in
McNHS.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale of the study

In fact, there’s named nomophobia it is everywhere in industrialized nations.

The term is an abbreviation for “no-mobile-phone phobia,” which

was coined during a 2010 study by the UK Post Office. The Post Office commissioned

YouGov, a research organization, to look at anxieties suffered by mobile phone

users. The study found that nearly 53 percent of mobile phone users in Britain tend

to be anxious when they “lose their mobile phone, run out of battery or credit, or

have no network coverage.” The study found that about 58 percent of men and 47

percent of women suffer from the phobia, and an additional 9 percent feel stressed

when their mobile phones are off. The study sampled 2,163 people. Fifty-five

percent of those surveyed cited keeping in touch with friends or family as the main

reason that they got anxious when they could not use their mobile phones. The

study compared stress levels induced by the average case of nomophobia to be on

par with those of “wedding day jitters” and trips to the dentist [Elimore, 2014].

In the Philippines, it holds the record of fastest-growing market for

smartphones in Southeast Asia [ International Data Corporation]. A 2011 study

showed that more than half of the student volunteers were unable to last 24 hours

without their smartphones, computers, MP3 players. Many of the volunteers

reported mental and physical symptoms 0f distress when asked to unplug for an
entire day. “Students talked about how scary it was, how addicted they were. They

expected frustrations. But they didn't expect the psychological effects, to be lonely,

to be panicked, the anxiety, literal heart palpitations.”, said Susan Moeller, a

professor who led the project, in an article on CBC. Ca. [Rappler].

Technology has expanded and evolved so much since. It’s a new phenomenon

that many adults today weren’t taught how to manage as children, because it didn’t

exist in those times. And even the kids that are growing up with modern technology

are not all able to keep up with the recent pace of advancement. Parents are

especially bewildered. Generally, they find it hard to know how to handle

technology in their own lives, let alone in the lives of their children. They know, for

instance, that cyberspace is a precarious place for the kids, and yet they don’t know

for sure how to protect the young ones. The future looks rather scary for the older

generation. Today’s parents are scared to think of what technology is yet

forthcoming from much younger minds. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and others who

helped create major technological advances are products of a generation that did

not grow up in an electronics age; they belong to a time that observed more

precaution. [Arnoco, L. (2017). Bewildered by Technology].

With the present necessity and the existence of the problem, this study

triggered the researchers to conduct, investigate, examine and gather deeper

information in order to find solutions on how to lessen the problem and encourage

the students to start evolving in a good way as technology upgraded.

This study assumes that electronic gadget affects the performances of SHS

students. The study is anchored on Behaviorism Theory developed by John B.

Watson and Distributed Cognition Theory by Edwin Hutchins.

Figure 1 shows that this study was anchored on the Behaviorism Theory by

John B. Watson which stated the electronic gadget addiction is a learned behavior

when students surround themselves with gadget. The contributed Cognition Theory

by Edwin Hutchins which stated that individual interact with the minds around and

other elements of environment that gives knowledge to each person. The study aims

to determine relationship between the level of usage of electronic gadget in terms of

internet accessibility, number of hours and frequency of usage towards the

academic performance of Senior High School students. This study also anchored on

Distributed Cognition Theory by Edwin Hutchins which explains that individual

interact with the minds around surroundings to gain information across the various

sources, journal entries, video technologies, computer programs, social networking

sites and gaming software. This study shows that the environment, peers,

networking sites and other factors have negative impact on the academic

performance of Senior High School students of Mactan National High School. The

data gathered were the analyzed properly in order to compare results and correlate

the two components which are needed to answer the problems of the study.

Conclusions were drawn and possible recommendation were not only to achieve

better social interaction away the process of teaching and learning but also to

improve the academic performance of Senior High School students.

Review of Related Literature

Today's youth have unprecedented access to modern technology and use it

on unexpected and expected ways (Magwa, 2013). The impact of digital

transformation changes the way of education both inside and outside the classroom.

The use of learning media and devices such as e-learning and MOOC (Massive

Open Online Course) have been integrated in smart phone and utilized by learners

(Yuan, Powell, 2013). Another research shows that the use of information

technology in middle school may help students to increase their academic

performances (Lei and Zhao, 2007). However, the use of smart phone also has

negative issues and might lead to several conditions such as internet addiction

disorder Starcevic, 2013; Wallace, 2014), accidents for pedestrians (Nasar &

Werner, 2013) as well as health and lifestyle (Wallace, 2014).

Bruce and Lewin (1997) cited in Centre for Children and Technology look at

ways in which applications can support integrated enquiry-based learning to engage

students in exploring, thinking, reading, writing, researching, inventing, problem

solving and experience of the world.

Electronic gadget shows an integral part of life especially to the learners.

Teenagers frequently use the computer and internet for school work: it completes

the school assignments(Magwa, 2013). Modern technology also motivates and

engage the learners when students have a choice in their assignments, see the

relevance or can self-asses with teacher-feedback interviewed, student motivation

increases (C, O'Hara and Pritchard, 2010).

The rapid evolution of modern technology has indeed broadened Society's

vision of technology as tools for developing children's skills and motivating in

academic areas. Of all the positive evolution of modern technology, electronic gadget

on academic areas has a detrimental effects on students (Dehmler, 2009).

Due to excessive and uncontrolled usage, it has drawback to each learners

that affects the study. The number of hours spending on gadget is increasingly

rapidly specifically the hours spending in social websites. Although teen users

experience delight and enjoyment when interacting with others on social networks,

they may lose control over tasks they expected to perform (Roois, Limayem amd

Salehi-Sangari, 2011).

Generation-Y i.e. the present generation is psychologically addicted to the

social Medias like face book, Twitter, Linked In etc. The addiction causes intra-

psychic conflicts such as intolerance and relapse among the youth (Cabral, 2011).

Furthermore, some of the popular social networking sites used currently are

such as: Facebook, Google+, Orkut, Twitter and so on (Carlson, 2010). Recently,

every other day, information technology (IT) invents lucrative gadgets that are

attravting the largest consumer of such devises and services that causes addiction.

Addiction is the confirmed repetition of a behavior upon the adverse or negative

consequences. (Angres and Angres, 2008) or it can be a neurological impairment

which leads to such behaviors. (American society for Addiction Medicine, 2012).
Excessive technology use may affect academic performance, relationships, as

well as overall development among youth. Such baffling technology use has been

identified as technology addiction and has many negative impacts on health and

social behaviour (Young, 2004).

Electronic device and its voracious use of tech services leads to a big impact

on the youth. It wants them to do things faster, easier and cheaply. Everybody wants

to do things according to their own schedule and pace, failing in which they become

anxious. Face to face communication is avoided by the young mass, which is not

good for the society (Erickson, 2012).

Electronic gadget is a double edge sword. From the above review, it is clear

that the youth of today are the principal consumer of technology. This mixed set of

research finding led to think how youth is using gadget to bring about positive

changes in their lives and avoid negative consequences of using technology

excessively (Jyoti, 2014)

Related Studies

Many Researchers found out that electronic gadget is still sketchy and

ambiguous. Some initial indicates of positive and negative effects are begging to

engage. They discover that there's no significant correlation between the students

who are in electronic devices and the academic learners (Sabrahamanyam, Icraut,

Greenfield and Gross, 2000)

A probe examine that tasks are maximized with the use of modern gadgets. It

is easier to accomplish daily tasks and people are also able to do work with

efficiency. One cannot even dare to imagine life without smart phones, cell phones,

laptops, tablets, iPods and so on (Tech Crates, 2012).

Researchers asserted that most students agreed that “electronic gadgets are

the best source of entertainment” and “survival is difficult without technological

gadgets even for one day.” The majority of the students were uncertain when asked

whether they were “unaware about (your) surroundings while busy with gadgets”

and “electronic gadgets cause generation gap between children and their parents.”

Among the excessive users of mobile phones and tablets, 90.6% and 87% students,

respectively, stated they would react (be sad, angry, or anxious) if their mobile

device was taken away from them (Master, Kaur, Narasimhan, Nadeem, Ali and

Shaik, 2016).

In addition, in the study findings, teenagers frequently use the electronic

gadget and internet to find information for their schoolwork; they use them to
complete school assignments. Students can learn from technology to become

independent learners.

In line with this finding, Marshal (2002) cited in Honey, Culp and Spielvogel

(2005), found strong evidence that modern technology complements what a great

teacher does naturally, extending their reach and broadening their students’

experiences beyond the classroom. That is why, the modern technology serves as

the best rescuer. Honey et al (2005) go further to say, young people are taking

advantage of the new powerful electronic gadget. Three quarters of online teens use

instant messaging, representing close to 16 million youth. Of these 16 million, 78%

say they use instant messaging to talk about homework, tests or schoolwork.

Subrahmanyam et al (2000) posits that cognitive researchers suggest that for

example, playing computer games can be an important building block in enhancing

children’s ability to read and visualize images.

In the study conducted by Englander et al., (2010), he observed that students

spend more time using electronic gadget for other purposes apart from educational

use, thus affecting their academic performance. In another study Nalwa and Anand,

(2003), shows that students like to use internet for their own responsibilities and

this affects their academic performance.

Moreover, the researchers profess that Some of the popular social

networking sites used currently is such as Face book, Google+, Orkut, Twitter etc.

Face book was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004 (Carlson, 2010).

Recently, every other day information technology or IT invents lucrative gadgets are
attracting the attention of the present generation. As a vulnerable group, the youth

becomes the largest consumer of such devices and services.

On the other hand, “Too much of anything is good for nothing” as what

Mrs.S.Esther Jennifer quoted. Excessive use of technology has its drawbacks on

educational achievement (Dehmler, 2009). Electronic gadgets provide with you the

all information of the world at few flicks of the finger.

Everything is ready just person has to click on enter for their search. All these

electronic gadgets directly and indirectly used by each and every age group of the

people and they are also used to it. The number of hours as noted by the study,

adolescents spend using technology, is increasing. Adolescents spending many

hours surfing social websites. They engage in constant interaction and socialization.

Their attraction to and involvement in activities on social platform likely means

greater concentration. Although teen users experience delight and enjoyment when

interacting with others on social networks, they may lose control over other tasks

they are expected to perform. (Roois, Limayem & Salehi – Sangari, 2011).According

to Sari and Mitsalia (2016), the use of gadgets is categorized as high intensity when

using a gadget with a duration of more than 120 minutes/day and in one use is > 75

minutes. Also, a day can be many times (more than 3 times usage) the use of gadgets

with a duration of 30-75 minutes will cause addiction in the use of gadgets.

Furthermore, the use of medium intensity gadgets if using a gadget with a duration

of more than 40-60 minutes/day and intensity of use in one use 2-3 times/day for
each use. Based on the research, it was found that the emotional mentality of

respondents with an abnormal category was 28.2%.

According to Sundus M (2015) about the effect of using gadget. Based on the

research, it was found that the emotional mentality of respondents with an

abnormal category was 28.2%. According to Sundus M (2015) about the effect of

using gadgets on children that using too many gadgets causes depression in children

at certain ages. This also causes mental health problems in children in childhood

and adolescence. They may act depressed, or we can see the worst of these

symptoms of depression within a few days. Other studies conducted by Mingli et

al.,(2015) say that children who use gadgets for more than 2 hours per day have an

increased risk of screen time. Maywa (2013) research that the adolescents that are

exposed on too much computer games, television or other technological device or

electronic gadget, detracts from the quality of sleep which student experience and

will lead to poor academic performance as day functioning will be affected.

Strasburger, Jordan and Donnerstein (2010) found out also that, another

problem of excessive usage of electronic gadgets is that, it can weaken people’s

memory.

Magwa (2013) findings strongly suggest that: (a) electronic gadget has both

positive and negative effects in the is of education. (b) as time flies while absorbing

the joy and curiosity produced by the websites, no time is left to conduct school

activities. (c) the significant use of technology decreases student achievement if it

overused. (d) absorption distracts from the main task of studying or homework
preparation and impedes students' concentration. In addition, improper balancing

of time also bounces back the doings that will lead to a bad one.

In the Philippines, about 60 million or 58% of the total population have

access to the internet. The country is slightly above the global internet penetration

average of 50%, and higher than the rate in countries such as China (53%), Vietnam

(53%) and India (35%). The United States tops the list at 99%. Globally, there are

now 2.789 billion social media users 37% of the world's population across all

platform. The leading platforms are Facebook, which is home to 1.871 billion users.

WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are in a tie for second with a billion users each

(Rappler, 2017).

In sum, facebook has its younger audience with over 3 million fewer 13 to

17-year olds since July 2018. Twitter appears to be popular among Filipinos too as it

ranks 13th among countries that have the largest ad audience with an estimated 4.9

million users. Snapchat, meanwhile, is not as popular to Filipinos as the 3 other

social media platforms previously mentioned since the Philippines did not make the

top 20 countries with the highest number of users.

Nevertheless, electronic gadget is transforming the experience of

adolescents. It brings the good and the bad to adolescents. At its best as conclusively

remarked by Honey (2005), technology can facilitate deep exploration and

integration of information, high level thinking and profound engagement by

allowing students to design, explore, experiment, access information and model

complex phenomenon. However, high level engagement in social networking causes

students to lose focus on academic tasks and negatively affects their academic

result.

Based on the theories, related literature and studies which have bearings on

the present study, the conceptual framework of the study was formulated and is

found on the subsequent page.

Null Hypotheses of the Study

These were the hypotheses tested in the study:

Ho1: There is no significant difference in the level of the usage of electronic gadget

towards the SHS students.

Ho2: There is no correlation between the frequency use of electronic gadget and the

academic performance of SHS students.

Significance of the Study

The researchers believed that the findings accumulated by the study will

provide significant benefits of the following individuals:

the Department of Education will be able to identify the factors affecting

student's academic performance and could help to lessen the addiction using other

methods and ways that are needed for the students;

the School Administrators will be able to impose disciplinary action for

students who were addicted to electronic gadgets especially the students whose

grades and school attendance are greatly affected;

teachers would help to examine whether the use of electronic gadget has

negative implication on students’ note-taking behaviors and subsequent

performance on exam and study habits. Thus, they would impose discipline in the

classroom in the use of gadgets;

parents the would be reminded of their important roles as parents. They

would make constant follow-up on their children’s study time. They would spend

much time in reminding their children on the bad effects always staring into mobile

phones or smartphones;

students would be aware of their responsibilities while using their favorite

gadget because many academics and researchers believe that excessive use of the

internet and other sophisticated gadgets have the potential to become an addiction;
researchers would be provided with spring board to pursue an investigation

parallel to study.
