Fuelong Dreams, sustainable development in Malampaya

Jessie Abrogar. He is 21 years old having a house and lot, owned a carabao and having a farm field. He is
second to his family, with his daily living with his siblings and father as farmer. His father want his
children to have education. And when jessie went to school when he is a child, he is not willing to study
and then he try to learn how to work in farm then realize that its difficult to do and after that he want to
pursue his education instead and take business agriculture with the SAKA scholarship from shell
philippines foundation, Inc. supported by shell philippines exploration B.V. They also have SKP or training
for business skills for the people to enhance their skills and knowledge. They also have PLEAD Program,
in this program they have rules and regulations to avoid trouble. Jessie comply with those program and
strive for a good life. He is determined to achieve his dreams for his siblings and fathers as he achieved
his own dreams. Jessie is one of the example of the people who are successful farmer entrepeneurs.

Next is William and Sally Corpuz, they are originally from isabela but stayed in palawan with their family.
They have nothing but themselves in palawan. They try many business like bought hogs but it died, then
put a small store but it went bankrupt. They didn't give up in life and still hoping they can finally have the
right business for them. Then someone offer them a land with installment payment. Then the couple
starts to plant with different plants and starts to raise different kinds of livestock. And this couple already
attend to IFBS seminars or Integrated Farming Bio-System condeucted by Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc.
Supported by Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. William Corpuz talked some strategies or techniques for
the planting and raising animals. And now they are successful enterprenuers.

support of shell philippine exploration this couple get a loan and bought new motor boat to used in work
and continue to live their life. They encourage each other to keep fighting despite of every challenges.

Sister Ravena Dominguez or Sister Vena is one of the Salesian sister. She gave technological and practical
training in Agriculture. And she also known as fast driver in their village because she is driving a car for
her to transfer in different places for her to teach. Some of her students are richard leslie and edmar.
Sister Vena with the other communities have a vision and mission to change the people's perfective in
their province and to achieve this they have a program. And this program is Paradigm Shift for the Under-
privileged youth. And to the result of this program many people change their perspective, character and
livelihood. Edmar Cabatay is one of the people that can't afford education in their age then he said some
of the sister's came in their village and invited them to go in mary help of christians technology center.
While Leslie Alcala also one of the students of Sister Vena had struggle when he is studying, because of
the time management his encountering. After fishing he need to study then mend some nets for fishing.
Many people helps Salesian Sister to their mission, one of those are the local government, Malampaya
Project by pilinas shell foundation and shell philippines exploration. Richard Incapas one of the student
of Sister Vena says that after one year of their training in Mary help of Christians Technology Center, they
have given some loan assistance for them to start a business. Sister Vena said that introducing new
technology in those mangyan people need to be compatible with their culture and lifestyle. For them to
maintain the environment and prevent from destruction. Florencio Banaag learned doing business in the
products from their planting teached by the sisters. Sister Vena said that in terms of the problems of
people, they having heart to heart talk and by this, they can know more about those people. She said
that family is the most important. For her, jobs and money is not the right thing to give to the people
instead giving them knowledge to provide for their works.
Batangas

In introduction, said that OFW is true heroes but for Emma and Jun Caniedo it's not neccesary to go
abroad to become hero for your family. They discovered that the money earned overseas can be earned
in there own home. They managed to buy a car from their business, barbeque. Emma is one of the
members of BUBI or buklod unlad batangas incorporation, this organization is compose of the poor
families in Batangas with the support of Malampaya through Pilipinas Shell Foundation. They are not
only giving them knowledge for business but also lending them some money from micro financing
programs that can help them to put some business. In the story of Emma and Jun Caniedo, in their store
they are not cleaning its floor and let the coins there until christmas season. They using it for the
celebration in christmas. They are very strict with their money for every expenses they take. They know
that business is very difficult to handle that's why their family is much closer to face those challenges.
And their story is one of the Filipinos that proves, you don't need to go abroad just be hero in your
family.

Liezel Evangelista is a 16 years old student from Isla Verde and daughter of a farmer. In 4am in the
morning,she get up to prepare for school. Then as normal student she go to school by 6am. She says that
their place is a paradise, peaceful and simple life. She also said that in their place there is no business to
make, no electricity, no water and no paved roads. She said that her parents only live for daily living and
sometimes she thinks that it would also be their future. She said that everyday she walks in mountain,
forest and river about 6km to go to school. She pursue her studying because she is believing that they
still have future someday. Ms. Analiza Velasco teacher from San Antonio High School said that Liezel is
quiet but intelligent student. And she says that many students graduated in their school don't go to
college because students prefer to work and help their families. But for Liezel, she want to pursue her
dream to finish her study. In their town, there still no electricity but they have solar panels and
computers given by Malampaya supported by Shell Philippines Exploration and shell solar philippines
corporation. Ms. Sacorro Comia says that students have no idea how to use computers, the reason why
when students go to college in other town don't know how to use it. But now, students in Isla Verde are
capable on using computers by the help of the teachers. With those simple things, people are having
their way to achieve their dreams.

Subic Zambales

Renewal the story of Sitio Agusuhin

A small fishing community with 200 families in Subic Zambales. They are away from development, no
electricity, no cars, jeeps or tricycles. Sitio Agusuhin was known as Green Beach when US Navy took over
the Subic Bay as home base. Samuel Marce is one of the bomb catchers, the one who collecting bullets
from the US Navy and change it into scraps. Its easy to earn money in this way but their life depends on
it. Some of the bomb cathers died because of some active bomb. After American Navy left, the bomb
catchers go back to fishing. Because of the poverty in life, education is the last priority of the people in
sitio agusuhin. Vangie Medul is one of Shell Foundation scholar and one of the graduates from college.
She said that transportation to school is also one of the difficulties of the students, they don't have place
to stay near in school so the students travelled by boat to go to school. By the agreement of Vangie and
Shell Foundation Scholar, they will give her the scholarship if she teach in Sitio Agusuhin. She said even
without the agreement she will still teach in that place for she know that they are lack on teachers to
teach. Malampaya Project build a Concrete Gravity Structure or CGS in Agusuhin with the recruited
workers from that place. Rommel Canlas is one of the worker recruit by the Malampaya project for the
construction of CNG. He said that they undergo in trainings and seminars and passed it to become a
worker. He said their community now have unity and have a better life when Shell came to their place.
By the help of Social Development Program by Malampaya and Pilipinas Shell Foundation the Sitio
Agunsuhin residents were optimistic to their lives and improved their establishments like clinic, daycare
center and playground. And through Community Based Forest Management Project the 100 hectares of
land is planted with different plants. They learned to plant and wait for the harvest to earn money and
stop in relying on easy money like the old times of being bomb catchers. Darwin Arboso is one of the
people doing reforestation project. Cawag Resettlement High School is founded by Shell, those leftover
materials from CGS donated to Agusuhin and use to build 8 classrooms. Now, many students are able to
go in school and graduate both elementary and high school. Nonoy Wenceslao became valedictorian
despite of difficulties in life. Bacause of their hardwork and persistence in studying they achieve their
goal to finish study.
