Problem 8.10.3

Determine the maximum size of the limsetone particles fed to crushing rolls run at 100 rpm, having rolls
of 150 cm diameter and 50 cm width of roll set at 1 cm. The angle of nip is 30° and the specific gravity of
limestone is 2.66. Also calculate the theoretical capacity of the crushing rolls.

Given:

n = 30°
r = 150 cm
a = 1 cm

Ƿ limestone = S.G x ƿ of water where: Ƿ = density of limestone (lbs/ft^3)

= 2.66 x 62. 4 lbs/ft^3 v = peripheral velocity (ft/min)
= 165.984 lbs/ft^3 L = width of rolls (ft)
Dp = distance between rolls (ft)
V = πNDr N = speed of rolls (rpm)
= π(100 rpm)(150 cm) Dr = diameter of rolls (ft)
= 47123.8898 cm/min x 1ft / 30.48 cm n = angle if nip
= 1546.06 ft/min r = Dr = diameter of rolls (cm)
a = Dp = distance between rolls
(cm)
L = 50 cm x 1 ft / 30.48 cm b = maximum size of particles (cm)
= 1.64 ft

Dp = 1 cm x 1 ft / 30.48 cm
=0 .0328 ft

Using ChE HB:

Cos n/2 = (r + a) / (r + b)

Using Brown Equations:

Ƭ = 60vLDpǷ / 2000
Solution:

Cos n/2 = (r + a) / (r + b)
Cos 30/2= (150 + 1) / (150 + b)
0.9659 = (151) / (150 + b)
b= 6.33 cm

Ƭ = 60 (1546.06 ft/min) (1.64 ft) (0.0328 ft) (165.984 lbs/ft^3) / 2000

Ƭ = 414.12 short ton/hr

Note: The answer in the book is in metric ton/hr that’s why it’s different. But if you convert it in short
ton/hr the answer you will get is 414.7, almost same in my answer above.

376.2 metric ton/hr x 1.10231 short ton / 1 metric ton = 414.7 short ton/hr
