LABORATORY SKILLS MECHANICS
The Laboratory Skills category will be one of the bases for being selected as a member of the team
that will represent the Philippines in the International Biology Olympiad 2019. It is a three-round
competition category that aims to test the laboratory knowledge and skills of the contestants. The
competition will require the contestants to evaluate biological problems using the necessary skills.
Section 1. General Mechanics
1.1. The Laboratory Skills category is subdivided into three rounds: Elimination, Semifinal, and Final.
1.1.1. The ranking of each round will be based on a curved grading system where the highest
score will equate to 100 points.
1.1.2. The Elimination round will be conducted and scored as teams of two (2). Both
members must participate and compete against other teams. Only the top 15 teams will
continue on to the Semifinal round,
1.1.3, The Semifinal round will be conducted and scored individually thus all 30 contestants
will compete with each other. The scores from the Elimination round will carry over to the
Semifinal round. From here, only the top 15 contestants will proceed to the Final round,
1.1.4, The Final round will be conducted and scored individually thus all contestants will
compete with each other. The scores from both the Elimination and Semifinal round will
carry over to the Finals round. Thus, the ranking for the Final round will be based on the sum
total of the scores of all rounds.
1.2 The Laboratory Skills category aims to test the contestant’s ability to solve biological problems by
utilizing their critical thinking skills and knowledge on the following areas of study:
1.2.1. Plant Biology
1.2.2. Animal Biology
1.2.3. Human Biology
1.2.4. Molecular Biology
1.2.5. Biochemistry
1.2.6. Bioinformatics
1.3. The contestants will be ranked based on their scores on the prepared worksheets.
1.3.1. The worksheet aims to test the knowledge of the students in several concepts in
biology and their ability to apply this knowledge into the laboratory activities. The
worksheets will contain the questions the students need to answer, illustrate, or graph.
1.4, Contestants will be assigned to a specific laboratory room and will be given a station containing
all the necessary materials and equipment needed for the activities.
1.5. Once the contestants have settled into thelr stations, attendance will be checked. They will be
briefed regarding the proper handling of laboratory equipment and the materials and reagents to be
used for the activities. Failure to comply will result in deductions for the team. (See section 5)
1.6. Proctors will roam around the venue to monitor and enforce proper implementation of
instructions and rules.
17. The students must be able to perform the given laboratory exercise and finish answering the
worksheet within the allotted time limit (See sections 2, 3 and 4).4

QUIZ BEE MECHANICS
The Quiz Bee aims to test the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the concepts of Biology
through a competition that promotes teamwork, integrity, and academic intelligence. This
competition will challenge the participants mastery of the topics not only through questions that
would ask specific facts and concepts, but also through theoretical tasks that will require them to
apply their understanding of the topics.
Section 1. General Mechanics
1.1 The Quiz Bee will be composed of three rounds: Eliminations, Semi-Finals, and Finals
1.1.1 Each round of the Quiz Bee is worth 100 points, all three rounds adding to a grand total of 300,
points.
1.2 Teams will be composed of two members. Both members of each team are required to
participate in every round of the competition.
1.3 Any form of dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any team caught in the act of cheating will
automatically be disqualified from the competition,
1.4 The competition will cover the following major topics with the following proportions:
1.4.1 Neurobiology (20%)
