Tips on writing stories based on picture/pictures.

1. Study the picture or pictures carefully – describe each picture. Brainstorming words
that can be used to describe the picture.

2. Ask yourself Wh-questions to help you:

- Where is the place?

- Who are the people? – give them names

- What are they doing?

- What happened? / What is happening?

- When is it? (time)

3. Try to connect the ideas from one picture to another.

4. Organise your ideas. Use linking words like ‘After that….’,’ Later…’. Write in 5 to 7
paragraphs. Each new idea can be in a separate paragraph.

5. Write down the words and ideas or words that come to your mind beside each
picture. You don’t have to use all of them in your composition.

6. Decide on the tense- past tense is usually used in telling stories.

7. Expand your story by giving some interesting details – don’t change the story. Use all
the words given.

8. You may add dialogue to make your story interesting.

9. Write short sentences – however make sure you write simple, compound and
complex sentences. Examples:

a. Simple sentence – Hafiz is a wealthy man.

b. Compound sentence – Hafiz is not only wealthy but he is also a generous


man.

c. Complex sentence – Hafiz, who is a wealthy man, loves visiting the orphan
and the less unfortunate.

10. Use correct punctuation marks.

11. Give a title.

12. Check your grammar or spelling errors.
