Design of Concrete Inserts for Sliding Table for Future Bearing Replacement

Introduction
For the purpose of future bearing replacement upon completion of CBL main bridge, sliding tables will be installed on the side
faces of the V-pier beams to faciliate such operation. As instructed by Supervisor, we (CRBC) has undertaken the design of
concrete insert to be installed on side faces of the V-Piers for future installation of the sliding table by others.

In the absence of design criteria any and information about the design and structural form of the sliding table from the client or relevant authorities ,
the design of the concrete insert was made based on our envisaged structural form of the sliding table as illustrated below, the assessment of the
structural adequacy of envisaged steel members of the sliding table is beyond our scope of works. 5mm thk Steel Plate Assumed

For Design of Concrete Insert

For assessing the capacity of the proposed TCM concrete insert, Strength Limit State Design Approach is adopted in this design checking where
the ULS factored load undertaken by the load is checked against the Design Reduced ultimate tensile / shear capacity of the proposed anchor type.

Load Combination (COP for Structural Use of Steel 2011)

To make allowance for the uncertainty in the design of sliding table, load factor of 2 is applied to all loads, crtical load combination will be:
1) 2.0 DL(Sliding Table) + 2.0 LL (Bearing) + 2.0 WL (Down)

Summary of Design Load Input for SAP2000 Model

1) Live Load - Bearing (Without Socket)
The Self-weight of the bearing (without socket) will be exerted on the sliding table
Summary of self-weight of bearings of different types are provided by Freysinnet as below

Load Intensity (Without Socket)

1.55

1.82

1.86 (Critical Case)

Hence, Bearing weight of 2.9T is considered in our design for the cast-in socket for future sliding table
According to 4.4.3.4 of BS 5975, an additional factor of 0.25 shall be applied arising from the dynamic loading from loads moving vertically.
Therefore, imposed loads from bearing = 1.25 x 29 = 36.25 kN (included dynamic factor)
Area load imposed by bearing weight = 36.25 / 1.5625 = 23.2 kPa
This Area Load is assumed to be imposed over the entire area of the sliding table (2m x 2m) despite the size of the biggest bearing is 1.25m x 1.25m, which is adequate to cover
any equipment load / live load from workers around the bearing acting onto the sliding table
In the SAP2000 model, such loading will be acting on 3 rows of beam members supported by the bracket frames as UDL over the entire beam length for conservative design

On Middle Beam
Loaded Width 1 m
UDL 23.2 kN/m

On Edge Beams
Loaded Width 0.5 m
UDL 11.6 kN/m
