Semester in Review

After my first semester of college English I can already see many differences between my

high school English experience and the college level. In high school all our teachers were

worried about was keeping us out of trouble. They would more just manage the class then

attempt to instruct us on any new information, it kind of felt like they were watching the clock

just as much as the students were. I attended a Vocational high school so the student body had

already mostly written off higher education and had already started perusing a trade skill so they

could enter the work force right after school. I think the teachers always kind of had this in mind

in class, that this would be the end of our education and if they could just get us through the

school year everyone would be happier.

In stark contrast my college English experience is focused on teaching skills needed

produce professional level papers and reports that I might encounter further down the road in my

college career. Learning such things the many different types and style of writing formats and the

proper way to use them, how to cite works you’ve quoted or used in your paper and even little

things like how to stay in the proper verb tense when writing so as not to confuse the reader on

the timeline of the events.
