Unit: Numbers & Operations


Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add,
subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Lesson 1: Order of Operations; Addition & Subtraction in PEMDAS

Objectives: Solve expressions by using the correct order of operations.

Content Standards: Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and


subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers.

Materials: Pencil, eraser, timer, PEMDAS index card problems, Textbook worksheet,
Overhead projector, whiteboard, erasable marker

Teaching Outline:
1. Warm up 10 problems of negative addition and negative subtraction on
overhead projector.
2. Verbally go over answers to warm up problems.
3. Pass out 6 PEMDAS index cards to groups of 3-4 students. Give them 3
minutes to work as a group and solve.
4. When 3 minutes are up, switch cards with other groups. Repeat 3-4 times.
5. Have textbook worksheet page 5 on overhead projector. Have volunteer
students come up and solve problems.
6. Pass out Addition & Subtraction Homework 10 problems.
