Objective K.2 Students will investigate and understand that humans have senses that
allow one to seek, find, take in, and react or respond to information in order
Content

to learn about one’s surroundings. Key concepts include

a) five senses and corresponding sensing organs (taste – tongue, touch – skin,
smell – nose, hearing – ears, and sight – eyes)
Online
Activity Gizmos (explorelearning.com) simulation of the 5 senses will be used in a
whole class synchronous lesson. Prior to this lesson students will be asked to
fill out a research map. For this map there will be 5 bubbles, each with one of
the senses. Students will be asked to fill out any prior knowledge they have of
the senses. (drawing pictures or writing words) To begin this lesson I will
briefly go over the 5 senses and what part of our bodies they are related to.
Then as a class we will work through the Senses simulation. In the simulation
the user drags an object (apple, ball, dog, ice, lemon, needle, flower, and
speaker) to the stimulus box, one of the two boxes in the simulation. The
second box is the sense organ. Again, the user drags one of the organs (eye,
tongue, eye, ear, finger) to the box and then presses play. The simulation will
then show you how the brain reacts to the combination (finger touching a ball,
eyes seeing dog, ear hearing a speaker, …ect) and what the resulting sense is.
In this part of the lesson the students will have the ability to chime in a
request a specific combination. Following each simulation, we will discuss as a
class the results and go over any questions. To end the lesson the students will
edit their research maps with a blank one printed on the opposite side of the
