Technology in the Learning Environment

Definition:

1. Educational Technology is the development, application and evaluation of systems, techniques

and aids to improve the process of human learning (Council for Educational Technology for the
UK)
2. Educational Technology is a systematic way of designing, implementing and evaluating the total
learning and teaching in terms of specific objectives based on research in human learning and
communication; and employing a combination of human and non-human resources to bring
about more effective instruction (Commission on Instructional Technology, USA)
3. Simply stated, educational technology is the application of the results of researches and studies,
material or non-material to improve teaching and learning,

Task 1:

Draw a semantic web indicating the relationship of educational technology to other

aids of teaching.
Roles and Functions of Educational Technology:

1. Arouse and sustain the interest and attention of the pupils/students to learn
2. Concretize abstract concepts/ideas to promote meaningful learning
3. Make learning more permanent because of the rich experiences that they provide
4. Provide self-activities for independent learning
5. Increase vocabulary by eliminating verbalism
6. Develop continuity of thought
7. Increase the quality of learning while decreasing the time spent
8. Check pupil preparedness
9. Make learning more interactive, hence learning is improved.

Task 2:

Think of Educational Technology that best holds the roles and functions mentioned.
Share it with the class.

Guidelines in the selection of Instructional Materials

1. Size
a. Is the material big enough to be seen by the farthest pupil in the room?
b. Is relativity of size of pictures observed when it is viewed with other materials or pictures?
2. Color
a. Is the material colorful?
b. Does the color facilitate understanding?
3. Durability
a. Can the material stand several uses?
b. Can it be used over and over again?
4. Economy
a. Is the material worth its cost?
b. Or can a cheaper material in terms of time spent in preparing it and in terms of the cash
value be used?
5. Easy to Handle
a. Is the material light and easy to manipulate?
b. Is it easy to put up and then store for future use?
6. Relevance
a. Is the material up-to-date?
b. Is it related to the lesson in particular and to the specific needs, problems and experiences
of the target clientele?
7. Novelty
a. Does the material possess and element of newness?
b. Can it arouse the curiosity and a sense of discovery in the learners?

Task 3:

Think of an educational technology that possesses at least 3 from the list of guidelines.
Identify and explain why such educational technology possesses these elements.
A. The following are conditions to explain further the seven roles of educational
technology. Write the number of the role that is being explained in the bank.

_______ 1. The use of too much words which are not understood by the learners are
discarded.
_______ 2. Instructional Media heightens motivation and the will to learn.
_______ 3. Concepts like freedom, war, and famine are being given examples to explain them.
_______ 4. Generalizations about issues are easily grasped because issues in succession are
seen as cause and effect relationship.
_______ 5. Provide mastery and thorough learning because of the interest inherent in the
activities.
_______ 6. One learns faster in lesser time, or one can do more in lesser time as in the case of
copying by hand against photocopying.
_______ 7. Once pupils are kept busy, or are provided with objects or materials to work on
they can learn independently.

B. Below are situations. Tell what characteristics of good instructional

materials are related.

_______ 1. Putting a masking tape or scotch tape on the edges of the chart.
_______ 2. Text of non-projected still pictures or visuals must be enlarged.
_______ 3. Whether the instructional material is projected or non-projected, these must be
clearly seen by the farthest pupil.
_______ 4. When choosing instructional devices, the price in relation to the benefits it gives
to a group of learners must be taken into consideration.
_______ 5. The material is chosen on the basis of the pupils’ readiness and maturity.
_______ 6. The picture should show the relative size of all the elements of the scene.
_______ 7. Contrasting colors must be used in the instructional materials to vividly
emphasize points.
_______ 8. The pupils must be allowed to tinker with the material so as to acquire first-hand
experience.
_______ 9. The material shown to class must be something different from what they usually
see.
_______ 10. The material can be kept or stored in a safe place for use in the future.
Watch a video of a teacher doing a teaching demonstration. Focus your observation on
the utilization of the educational technology. Evaluate the use of educational technology
based on the following rubrics. Justify your ratings by writing your remarks.

1. What educational technology was used in the teacher’s teaching demo?

2. What are the roles and functions of educational technology used in her demo?

3. Based on the Guidelines, rate the use of educational technology used by the teacher in the
demo? Justify your rating by writing your remarks.
