Test format and procedure ‘The Speaking sub-test is specific to each profession. You take this part of the GET using materials specifically for your profession ~a nurse does the task for nursing, @ dentist does the task for dentistry, and so on. ‘The Speaking sub-test is face-to-face. Its a simulated dialogue between a patient and a health: practitioner, Candidates are required to paniipate in two different role-play situations based on typical workplace situations and the demands of the profession. ‘The details of each role-play are set out on two role-cards. Candidates take the role of the health. professional while the interviewer takes the role of the patient or client This sub-testis in three parts: 1. Warm-up conversation (this is not assessed) ‘The purpose of the warm-up conversation is to explain the format of the test and ta help the candidate to relax. The interviewer will ask about areas of professional interest, previous ‘work experience, future plans, etc, 2. First role-play (assessed) The interviewer hands the candidate a role-play card which the candidate reads carefully ‘Any questions are to be asked and answered before the role-play begins. The interviewer will finish the role-play after about five minutes 3. Second role-play (assessed) The above procedure is repeated with a different role-play, ‘The whole interview is recarded. It is important that the candidate and the interviewer speak clearly 50 thatthe assessor can understand everything tha is said. Two role-plays are provided to ensure the assessment is fair. The Speaking sub-text is nota test of your professional Knowledge, however, its expected that you will use Professional knowledge as appropriate to inform the language that ‘might be used in real-world situations Similar to those ofthe role-plays. The role-plays allow the candidate to take his/her professional role and demonstrate the ability to deal with common workplace situations. ‘These situations may include elements of tension which are a normal part of the real-life context [or example, patients who are anxious or angry, patients who misunderstand their situation, patients who may not agree with you etc.) Having two role-plays provides two separate opportunities to demonstrate spoken proficiency: the wo scenarios provide a chance to use different kinds of language, therefore giving a broader view of the candidate's spoken skills, Assessment information ‘The Speaking sub-test is scored by two experienced assessors who receive ongoing training, monitoring, and feedback on their performance after each administration of the test. Assessors give @ score from 1 t06 for each ofthe five criteria listed above using.a detailed set of level descriptors to guide their decisions. A score of Bis the highest for each criterion, The five criteria are equally weighted in the scoring and analysis process. Each candidate's recorded sound file is graded by two assessors independently, Neither assessor knows the scores the ather assessor gives or the scores avrarded to the candidate for other sub-tests. Review the OET website ~ lots of clues there 2. When you receive your roleplay card, you have up to 3 minutes to: a. Study it well, and note any key words. in Particular, note the words that tell you what you need to do (see below). b. If you don’t understand ‘@ word or phrase, ask the interviewer for its. ‘meaning before the role play starts. (You will not be penalised for ‘this, but hopefully it will not be every word ‘that needs explanation!) 3. Think about your role in the plays: a. What is your role? ‘b. What is the inter lewer's role? (Usually as a Patient, but sometimes as a Spouse, parent, carer etc). ¢. Where is the conversation taking place? (hospital, clinic, ICU, ete) G+ What i the current situation, and sit urgent? that wil affect yeur choice of language) €. What background information do you have about the Patient, and do you need to mention it? (some will be important, and some not). F Have you met the patient before? This will impact on how you start the conversation — you have met the patient before, then you will not start with a formal introduction, You may, for example, start with — “How have you been since | saw you last?” 8. What other, non-verbal, ‘elements are involved in the ‘conversation? (For example, does the patient seem anxious, disinterested, angry etc?) 4. Remember how you reacted when you were Practising in your old country — you will get clues from your old language skills, 5S. Be ready to start the role play ~ you normally have to initiate the conversation. Don’t memorise a start that you do all the time - it has to be appropriate to the situation, 6. If the role play needs a full history, then take it, but remember that a lot of role plays require You to give advice, reassurance etc —so ‘don’t use up all your time taking a history. 7. When you think the play should stop, work towards bringing it to a close. Often good way {0 do this Is to make a short summary of your instruction or suggestions, arranging a follow- up, and giving any instructions about what to do in the meantime if things go wrong. 8. If, during the role play, the interviewer ‘Says something that you don’t, understand, then ask him to repeat or rephrase it. That is GOOD communication ‘technique (unless you do it with every sentencel). 9. Constantly try to ‘read’ the emotions of the interviewer. ‘They may be playing a role where they are upset, or angry, or disinterested, Try to find out ‘why, and offer suggestions. Sometimes the interviewer will stop the interview quickly ~ you have Probably already spoken for 5 minutes, and there is enough material to gauge your speaking skis.
