Metro Cinemas Bathurst website’s Usability Analysis using the
Neilson and Moloch heuristic.

Usability Issues:

1. Video Loading Gap

1.1 What’s the Issue?

On the home screen of Metro Cinema’s website, detail of movies that are
currently being presented in cinema are present along with their trailers. When you click
on the play button, the website shows a dim effect on screen without any indication of
video being loaded hence not providing the user with system’s status.
1.2 Why an Issue?
The above stated issue contradicts with one of the design guidelines which says
“Visibility of System’s Status”. This gap of few seconds might confuse the user about
the video. And the questions like “Is it going to play?”, “Is it being loaded or not?” and
“Should I click on play button again or not?”. Might arise in the mind of users.

1.3 Significance
Video loading gap is not a very significant issue because the delay between click
and play is very short and can be ignored.
1.4 Remediation
Remedies to solve the above stated issues can include decreasing the time gap
between click and play. It can also be resolved by introducing a throbber or a progress
bar.

2. Pop Up Menu

2.1 What’s the Issue?

When the website is loaded for the first time, a pop-up menu appears on the screen
asking user to choose your relevant cinema and refuse to disappear until user made a
choice. This pop up is not only irritating and for a second user might think that “What if
I don’t want to choose? Can’t I view the website with a generic perspective? How to
close this without choosing?”
2.2 Why an Issue?
A study indicates that user takes average of 2 to 3 minutes to build an opinion about
the site. In understanding the nature of this pop up and in choosing a cinema 10 to 20
crucial seconds of this impression time is already wasted. This issue is a big question
mark on “User Control and Freedom” which hinders users from viewing the website in a
friendly and open manner.

2.3 Significance
The issue is very significant in its nature because it’s the very first impression of
website on the user.

2.4 Remediation
To solve this issue instead of asking user to select in the very beginning this
selection can be made by user manually by displaying this selection menu at a significant
place on home page. Introducing a close or hide option can also reduce the effect made by
this issue.

3. Required Fields

3.1 What’s the Issue?

While filling the create account form in the Members menu user finds no hint
about what field is essential to provide and what field in optional and doesn’t require to
be filled necessarily. This might create confusion if the user is not willing to give every
detail he is being asked for. He might get irritated with the length of form.

3.2 Why an Issue?

This above described issue violates the design guideline of “Flexibility and
Efficiency” as it prevents users from having the flexibility of only filling the necessary
fields. Because this lengthy of a form without having shortcuts can cause irritation and
annoyance for any user. This is also an issue related to “Error Prevention” because in
case if the user misses or neglect any compulsory field there is no reminding mechanism
and he won’t notice the mistake before clicking “Create Account” button.

3.3 Significance
The issue is very significant because it violates not only one design guideline but
two which makes it a major flaw in the respective website design.

3.4 Remediation
To solve this issue, we can split form in sections of necessary and optional fields
or we can also mark fields with star symbol to mark them as essential also we can
highlight the fields that users haven’t filled out yet.
4. Phone Number Field

4.1 What’s the Issue?

In the form that user has to fill in order to create a membership account, a specific
field is present which demands the phone number of the user.

The field indicates the format of phone number effectively but the issue with this
field is that once you enter the number you cannot edit or change or delete it from the
field leaving the user with the only option to reload the page in order to change or edit the
phone number.
4.2 Why an Issue?
As like other fields where you provide the information required and in case of
incorrect entry you can change the field’s data or edit it to the correct one, this specific
field doesn’t allow you to edit the phone number which contradicts with the design
guideline of “Error Prevention” which states that system must provide user with an
effective mechanism to deal with errors and mistakes but in this particular scenario the
interface fails to do so.

4.3 Significance
The problem is pretty significant as it is a very basic and expected feature in text
fields and necessary also.

4.4 Remediation
To resolve the issue, the only thing to do is provide users with facility to edit and
delete the entered phone number if found wrong.

5. Text in place of Icons

5.1 What’s the Issue?

In this very website the user can see a lot of text data in menu bar and navigation
bar which can exhaust the user with memorizing or reading all the text to find his way
around the website and it might be difficult for a user with poor English abilities to read
and understand all these options.

5.2 Why an Issue?

This practice as stated above promotes the idea of recall rather than recognition
but on the other hand our design guideline emphasizes on Recognition rather than recall
which creates a controversy here. But as the main focus of website is to attract users to its
business, from user’s point of view extensive text and written content might bore them.
5.3 Significance
The problem is not negligible not very significant either so we can conclude that
this issue is of normal concern because our audience prefers images/icons over text.

5.4 Remediation
To resolve this issue where possible text fields should be replaced with icon or
images according to their real word associations.

6. Text Size

6.1 What’s the Issue?

Text Size is very small in descriptive sections like Functions, About Us, Tickets
and FAQ the text is extensive and yet very small in terms of font size. It can be difficult
for users to read and understand and user might not read it just because of how small and
unclear the text looks to them.
Hence, we are pushing a large number of audience who tried to read the detail
but couldn’t because of font issues.

6.2 Why an Issue?

Reading text in such a small font size is exhausting and tiring considering the
fact that text is written in bulk without proper spacing. One of our design guidelines says
that “Aesthetic and Minimal Design”. But this font issue clearly brakes the Aesthetic
part of this guideline because reading or viewing a tiny text is not pleasant and aesthetic
by any mean.

6.3 Significance
The problem is quite significant is because reading text in a small font is quite
exhausted and hectic and also consider the fact that text is in bulk.

6.4 Remediation
The remedy of this problem is enhancing the font size of text to a readable size.
Normally 16px is considered a suitable size for website content because it is neither too
small nor too large and hence 16px is ideal for paragraphs and large text bulks for
websites.

7. Paragraphs instead of Points

7.1 What’s the Issue?

In Frequently asked questions that can be considered as a part of help and
documentation, instead of writing main key points with bullets, the answers are written in
paragraphs with bulk of text in it. No body is interested in scamming the whole
paragraphs to extract their required information.

7.2 Why an Issue?

The above stated issue contradicts with one of the design guidelines which says
“Help and Documentation” in an effective and efficient manner. This long paragraph
might confuse the users as he can’t pin point exact points or step to carry out a task. It
also contradicts with the rule of “Aesthetic and Minimal design” as design should be as
minimal as possible not containing redundant and unnecessary information.

7.3 Significance
This problem is not a very significant because at least the website has help and
documentation section as FAQ. Not in its most effective form but it still has the necessary
material needed.
7.4 Remediation
Remedies to solve the above stated issues can include breaking the paragraphs in
key points or key steps and then list them down in sequence with bullet points so It will
help the user with finding the solution of their problem or question.
Recommendations:

1. Video Loading Gap

This issue can be resolved by following the stated below actions:

 By adding a throbber (The circular loader icon) which will appear between the time gap of click
and play.
 By adding a progress bar (Shows the percentage of video being loaded) which will also appear
between the gap time.
 By minimizing the time gap to milli seconds to reduce the effect of wait.

2. Pop Up Menu
This issue can be resolved by following the stated below actions:

 By adding a close option in a prominent red color on the top right corner of the pop-up menu.
 By adding a hide option in a prominent color on the top right corner of the menu.
 By stopping the menu from loading automatically, instead introduce a cinema button on
navigation bar and link the menu with that button only.
 Displaying This very pop up menu on a significant place on the home page i.e. below the movie
slider.

3. Required Field
This issue can be resolved by following the stated below actions:

 By dividing the form into two sections. One section should contain the fields that are necessary
to fill and a message should be displayed on top of the section which states its necessity. Other
section can contain optional fields and a message should be displayed on this section too
accordingly.
 By distinguishing the necessary fields from optional with the help of star along with field name.
 By distinguishing the necessary fields from unnecessary with adding a bracket and text along the
field name which says about the nature of field.

4. Phone Number Field

This issue can be resolved by following the stated below actions:

 Enable user to edit the phone number after dialing.

 Enable user to reset the field if he wants to.

5. Text In place of icon

This issue can be resolved by following the stated below actions:

 By adding icons in place of text where it’s possible

 By adding the icons universally accepted and understood by majority.
 Icons should be relatable in real word environment too, to provide a better understanding.

6. Text Size
This issue can be resolved by following the stated below actions:

 By increasing the text size to up to 16 pixels.

 By breaking the long paragraphs into small ones which are more precise and to the point.
 By adding a font size more suitable on the platform and more prominent of the screen.

7. Paragraphs instead of points

This issue can be resolved by following the stated below actions:

 By resolving paragraphs into key points

 By listing down those key points in sequence of steps to be performed.
 By adding bullet points to make them more prominent.
