"Where Excellence Is Expected"AUDITION INFORMATION FOR
FCHS CONCERT ORCHESTRA
To be a member of the FCHS Concert Orchestra, you must complete an audition demonstrating
that you are proficient in the areas of fingerboard knowledge, key signature understanding, two-
octave scales, shifting, and rhythm.
Two-Octave Scales
# At the beginning of the audition you are to demonstrate that you understand your
fingerboard and your key signatures. Two-octave scales will be used for this portion
of the audition.
# All two-octave scales are to be played from memory. Only scales up to three sharps
and three flats will be required.
# Be able to recite the order of sharps, (F# C# G# D# A# E# B#) and the order of flats,
(Bb Eb Ab Db Gb Cb Fb). You will be asked to give the major key signatures based
on the number of sharps or flats. For example...
I will ask, “Three flats is the key of 2" You should respond with,
"Eb Major". Then you will play a two-octave Eb Major scale.
# For violins and violas all two-octave scales must begin in first position. Make sure
you shift when it is appropriate. In this packet is a sheet of two-octave scales. The
fingerings provided are only suggested fingerings.
Shifting
# Much orchestral playing involves higher position playing requiring the musician to
shift. To be involved in Concert orchestra you must demonstrate the ability to shift
through the exercise provided.
Rhythm
‘# There are four sheets of rhythms. Each sheet has specific issues that you must show
proficiency on the first three exercises of each sheet.
# Practice these with a metronome at the specific tempo markings. During the audition
you will play these excerpts with a metronome.
Practice hard and expect great things at the audition
