ASKING AND GIVING ADVICE, SUGGESTION AND OPINION

In everyday life we will discuss many varied problems. Sometimes we cannot solve
our own problems so we need advice, suggestion and opinion from others.

1. Social Function
 To ask and give suggestion to someone and give responses to the suggestion whether
accepting or refusing it.
 To help someone who needs any suggestion or advice by giving our personal idea and
opinion in our daily life.

2. Formula Asking for Advice, Suggestion and Opinion


a) Formal :
 Can you give me any suggestions to solve my problem?
 Would you mind giving me any suggestions?
 Would you like to give me any advices?
 Do you have any suggestion for me?
 Do you have any ideas?
 Would you go along with that?
 Would you agree with me that … ?

b) Informal :
 What do you advise me to do?

 What should I do?

 What ought I to do?

 What do you suggest?

 Do you see what I’m getting at?

 Do you know/see what I mean?

 Do you agree with me?


3. Formula Giving Advice, Suggestion and Opinion
a) Formal :
Example :
 You ought to eat more fruit and vegetables.
 I recommend (that) you go to bed earlier.
 You should take some exercise.
 You could see a doctor.
 You should take her to see that movie. She'll love it!
 As far as I’m concerned …
 In my opinion … In my view …
 From my point of view …

a. Informal :
Example :
 What about going to the cinema tonight?
 How about playing cards?
 Why don't you go jogging?
 How about eating less sugary food?
 I (strongly) believe (that) …
 I (honestly) think (that) …
 I (really) feel (that) …

4. Responding For Advice, Suggestion and Opinion


a) Formal :
 Thank you/Thanks

 I’ll do/try that.

 Thanks, but that won’t work/ help because …

 That’s a good idea, but …

b) Informal :
 No, I’d rather not.
 I don’t feel like it.
 I don’t agree with you / that.
 I’d be inclined to disagree.
 That’s not the way I see it.
ROLE PLAY

 Formal
Foreigner : Would you mind giving me any suggestions about what kind of food I should
try in this city?
Tour Guide : You should try the signature food of this city called Gudeg. Would you go
along with me to the place that sells it then, we can try it together. Is it okay?
Foreigner : Thank You. That’s a good idea.

 Informal
Tour Guide : What do you think about the taste of the gudeg?
Foreigner : I think it’s quite a bit sweet. Do you know what I mean, right?
Tour Guide : I don’t agree with you. For me it tastes spicy.
