Simbang Gabi literally means “evening or night mass.” In practice, it refers to the Philippine Catholic tradición de los Filipinos católicos de celebrar el novenario de la Misa de Gallo, 15 -23 de

leading to Christmas Day. (In the Philippines, the dates are from Dec. 16-24 since Simbang Gabi is held in
the early morning.) El Simbang Gabi se origina de la Misa Aurea practicada por la Iglesia Católica Latina. Los

rescript granted by the Pope was the permission to sing the Gloria and to use the white vestments in the
celebration of the Simbang Gabi. This was to emphasize the joyful anticipation of the coming of the Savior. Se muestra el significado espiritual del Simbang Gabi en “el Rito de Simbang Gabi” en la

Originally (and still observed in most places in the Philippines), the Simbang Gabi masses were held in the deseo de los fieles de dar la bienvenida al salvador con corazones gozosos y humildes. En las

la luz y la vida del mundo.
The missionaries were able to sow the Gospel, cultivate Christian faith and build up the Catholic Church
while integrating essential Filipino cultural values in the Catholic worship and life. So, at the first sound of
dawn, the local bands started playing traditional carols all over town and church bells pealed to summon
everyone for the Simbang Gabi. Families would walk to the church passing by homes with lighted parol or
lanterns fashioned out of bamboo and colored paper. After mass, families and friends enjoyed the native
delicacies available at the churchyard strengthening the social and spiritual ties among them.

In the Simbang Gabi celebrations, the somber waiting at the beginning of Advent turns into an eager and
joyful longing for the Savior on the final nine days of Advent. This is best expressed by the “Simbang Gabi
Ritual” in the mass. Children in procession bring up an empty manger, a mantle, vigil candles and flowers.
They process to the tune of an Advent song. This ritual symbolizes the heart of the Church, humbly
trusting, openly and joyfully waiting for the promised Savior. In the darkness of the night, we sing with joyful
longing for the coming of the Savior, the Light of the world. In the deadly darkness of sin, we hope eagerly
for the coming of the Savior, the Life of the world.

In Simbang Gabi, we join Mary and Joseph, all other saints, prophets, and the Christian faithful throughout
history in joyfully welcoming the Savior who is the Light and the Life of the world. Music listed below reprinted with permission under OneLicense.net A-704695.
