Hi everyone, so we’ve already gone through some parts of the grammar teaching.

In this last minute, I am going to guide you to one of the most important parts of the grammar
teaching process. And it is HOW TO DEAL WITH GRAMMAR ERRORS.

Has anybody here ever made mistakes when using English.


Of course you have.

We are all
language learners.

And language learners make mistakes.


It seems to be an inevitable part of learning a language.
So let’s puzzle out the questions of how to deal with it. What I am going to do today is to clarify
the types of errors and then talk about the types of corrections.

There are 5 common errors that learners usually make when using E. LEXICAL ERRORS
GRAMMAR ERRORS DISCOURSE ERRORS TRANSFER ERRORS AND DEVELOPMENTAL
ERRORS.

But what are these? Please take a quick glance through this text. Can you find something wrong
or unusual? So what are the mistakes? the 3 sentences here represent for 3 common errors
that are errors in the wrong word choice, errors in the wrong form of the word and errors in
literal translation.

All these 3 types of errors here are LEXICAL ERRORS. To make it simpler, just remember
LEXICAL means connected with the words of a language.

Errors relating to words or the connection between words are LEXICAL ERRORS.

Move on to the next one. Grammar errors. Any mistakes in verb form or tense or grammatical
structures are all grammar errors.

Let’s take a look at a new type of errors. Can you point out the mistakes?

YES. it should be “Eventually” we still get the meaning of the sentence but it’s wrong. So errors
in a way sentences are organised and linked in order to make the whole text is DISCOURSE
ERRORS.

And in terms of spoken language there is one more type of errors that I want to add on
(discuss). PRONUNCIATION ERRORS. Anything relating to pronunciation.

Now, let’s jump right into the last two errors that are equally problematic for learners in general.
TRANSFER and DEVELOPMENTAL ERRORS.

You already know what transfer means. These errors occur when L1 grammar is used in L2
writing and speech. For example: One man. his L1 is Vietnamese, and L2 is English. when he
said Anh ta là luật sư. There is no article in it. So when he transfers that sentence into English,
he imitates the exact same form. No article.

How about developmental errors. ‘’Developmental’’ is in the process of learning right.\


DEVELOPMENTAL ERRORS IS A NATURAL PART OF THE LEARNING PROCESS. And
such errors seem to be influenced not by the learner’s first language but by the nature of the
second language itself. For example instead of saying spoke they say speaked or rangs. They
overgeneralized or we can say over-applied the language 2 rule. That is evidence that a
process of hypothesis formation and testing is underway..

That is all about errors. BUT HOW TO DEAL WITH EACH IS THE BIG QUESTION. There are
tons of how-to when it comes to correcting errors. But I just categorised it into 4 main
approaches. SELF CORRECTION, PEER CORRECTION, GROUP CORRECTION AND LAST
BUT NOT LEAST TEACHER CORRECTION.

AND EACH HAS its pros and cons. These are the pros of each method and the cons. I dont
have time to explain it in details.

So if you have any questions about each method just feel free to come ask.

But the important thing is, before you choose one piece of method to use in your class. You
have to rest assured that you know your students completely in order to use the correct and
most effective methods. teachers feedback differs widely among teachers and classes of errors,
and it depends on such factors as courses, objectives, assignments objectives, individual
expectations, strengths, weaknesses and attitude toward learning.

For example, when teaching speaking skills and a student makes mistakes, before correcting
them immediately. Ask yourself these questions. Does it have a major effect on communication?
Is it one that the learner could probably self-repair? Or in a type of activity, Is the focus of the
activity more on form or on meaning? If the latter, it is probably best to correct without interfering
too much with the flow of communication. In a nutshell, how many types of errors we’ve known
so far? There is one quote saying that

You are the one who makes an impact on others. You are the one who guide your students to
the way of success not anyone else. And I hope that our presentation somehow lights the way
