Summary –The Indian Civilization and culture.

In “Indian Civilization and Culture” Gandhi ji talks about ancient Indian civilization that elevates moral being. The
writer is of the opinion that nothing can equal the seeds sown by our ancestors. Other civilizations lost their glory
but the splendor of Indian civilization and culture is still immovable.

Civilization is the mode of conduct which shows us the path of duty. Performance of duty and observance of
morality are exchangeable terms.

Ethics is superior to the king’s swords. Our nation has courts lawyers and doctors but they are within bounds and
they do not rob people. The common people live independently and follow their agricultural occupation. They
enjoy true Home Rule. Indian civilization is a source of excellence. It propagates moral being whereas western
civilization immorality. Gandhi ji says that Indian civilization is based on a belief in god while western civilization is
godless.

Gandhi ji believes that modern civilization is the worship of material. It is suited to the western countries not India.
It is endless multiplicity of human wants. But Indian civilization is imperative control over our wants.

Our swaraj depends on self denial and not on self indulgence.

“Plain living is high thinking” he concludes by saying that a man must keep balance between physical and cultural
circumstances so that they do not hinder in him in his service of humanity.
