Literacy Center

The cookie sheets and magnetic letters will be used to phonological awareness. The “Swat A
Sight Word” game will be used to increase the student’s ability to recognize sight words. The “Letter
Construction Kit” will be used as a manipulative to build letters instead of writing them. Sight Word
Bingo is a fun way to implement the repetition of sight words. The wooden word blocks will give
learners a better understanding of beginning, ending, and middle sounds of a word.

Dramatic Play Center

The Melissa and Doug grocery store set offers students the opportunity to be the shopper or the
cashier in order to improve social skills. The wooden food groups give children a visual representation of
proper nutrition. Students can learn how to choose a balanced diet by choosing one source of protein,
bread, dairy product, fruit, and vegetable. A kitchen accessory set will open the door for the student’s
imagination. It is important to add some old cookbooks from home in order to give students the optimal
chance for real-world play. A doctor plush kit is used to enhance the role of a doctor or a nurse.
Community helper vests offers students the chance to dress and play the role of an outstanding citizen.
Brief descriptions of the roles would aid in the learning process as well. A set of multi-cultural dolls gives
students a hands-on experience of accepting diversity. Dolls also give the students the role of a
caretaker. Providing blankets and bottles aids the learner’s ability to act as a caretaker. Puppets can be
used to put on a play. Puppets can have a multi-use ranging from dramatic play, literacy, and an
authentic assessment. Students may find it easier to display their understanding when they feel as if the
light is not shining directly on them. I also included bringing some handmade mailboxes and an old bag
for the role of a postal worker. This could be used in centers or for a classroom job.

Science/Math/Discovery Center

The Monkey Brainy game provides students with automatic feedback when using manipulatives
to represent numbers. The Mental Blox are a way to implement critical thinking with an assortment of
images students must build through trial and error. The Lakeshore Color Sorting game is a fun way to
learn about categories, colors, and the use of fine motor skills. Lakeshore Shape Discovery Boxes give
students a visual representation and the opportunity to sort shapes into categories. The Dino Dig Sand
and Water Table give students the opportunity to play with textures and learn about Earth’s materials.
The sand is necessary to play in the sand and water table. The dinosaur eggs can be placed in the Dino
Dig Water Table as a fun way to learn about dinosaurs. Each egg that hatches has a card with several
facts listed about the dinosaur. Roylco Scents Sort Match-Up will aid in the student’s ability to better
understand their five senses.

Art/Music Center

Maracas, bells, xylophones, tambourines, and trophy triangles all allow students to create their
own music. They can also be used together to create music as a group. I also included string to connect
art and music by allowing the students to create their own bell instrument. I chose one CD that can get
the class going by playing circle time songs. I also chose a CD that contains multi-cultural music in order
to for students to understand that not everyone listens to the same music. Waterproof art aprons and
paint palettes will give the students the chance to feel as if they are a “real” artist. They will also prevent
a few messes. Although paper plates would be cheaper, I thought the palates would be eco-friendlier.
Providing students with two chalkboard art easels allows multiple ways to express their art.

Motor Skills Center

Play-doh allows children to enhance their fine motor skills through pinching, rolling, squeezing,
molding, and cutting it. The Lakeshore Tweezer Tongs allow children to use enhance their fine motor
skills through squeezing the end to pick up a small object. The KuToi Snow Flakes give students the
chance to manipulate small objects into larger objects, increasing fine motor skills. The Dress Boards are
a way to help children learn simple every day tasks that require the use of fine motor skills. Floor boxes
allow children to demonstrate large motor skills such as balancing on one foot and hopping. The
Crocodile Hop Floor Mat is a fun way to incorporate math, literacy, and the development of gross motor
skills.
