Developmental Justifications
7:45-7:55 Morning Meeting A morning meeting will establish the mood
for the day. It will promote the safety and
well being of students in the classroom.
Becky Bailey states, “the goal of these rituals
is real connection, not just saying hello
(Bailey, 2015).”
7:55-8:05 Calendar Time Calendar time is an essential start of the day.
During calendar time, students will learn how
what the day is and what special they will be
attending. Calendar time will also educate
children terms such as yesterday and
tomorrow.
8:05-8:20 Read Aloud A read aloud gives students the opportunity
to hear variations of reading that promote
emergent literacy.
8:20-8:30 Shared Reading During shared reading, the students will learn
the strategies and skills of a proficient reader.
The teacher will go over how they read the
book during the read aloud.
8:30-9:30 Reading Workshop The Reading Workshop contains three parts:
guided reading, individual reading, and
literacy stations.
The guided reading portion will give students
the opportunity to use the strategies learned
in shared reading with adult assistance.
The independent reading gives students the
opportunity to read on their level and
practice using skills learned independently.
Literacy stations provide children with
different ways to interact with text through
cooperative learning.
9:30-9:35 Music/Movement During this time the students will dance to
music for a brain break.
9:35-10:15 Play Centers Play Centers is a time for students to learn
through dramatic play, literacy, motor skills,
science/discover, art, and music centers.
10:15-10:45 Science/Social Studies (A and B Days) We will switch days for science and social
studies. This will give students an optimal
learning experience since we will have more
time to focus on one subject for an extended
period of time. It will also give us more time
to conduct experiments for science and plays
for social studies.
10:45-11:15 Lunch I chose a lunch time that is not too early and
not too late for young children.
11:15-11:45 Recess Recess is an essential part of the student’s
day. “Increased physical activity levels can
improve children’s academic performance
(Carlson, 2009; Shephard, 1997) (Henniger,
2017).”
11:45-11:55 Word Play World Play gives students provides students
with time to learn and review sight words.
11:55-12:10 Interactive Writing Interactive Writing gives students and
teachers time to work together to construct
text.
12:10-12:40 Writing Workshop During Writing Workshop, students will
explore their thoughts and feelings through
illustration and text. Students are able to play
with words in writing during this time.
12:40-12:50 Shared Writing Shared Writing gives students the chance to
learn new ways to write stories through a
proficient writer.
12:50-1:30 Specials/Teacher Conference Students will switch between music, art, and
P.E. on different days.
Meanwhile, the teacher will have their
conference period. This time can be used for
team planning or parent-teacher conferences.
1:30-1:40 Snack Snack time is an essential part of the day.
Providing children with the time to eat a
healthy snack gives them the opportunity to
boost their energy. According to Teaching
Young Children, “snack time should foster
independent student behavior and create a
relaxed atmosphere for eating and visiting
with others (Henniger, 2017, p. 166).”
1:40-1:50 Math Play During Math Play, students will review their
previous math lessons that lead up to the
new lesson of the day.
1:50-2:15 Math Lesson During the math lesson, the teacher will
provide students with content needed to
understand mathematics.
2:15-2:30 Guided Math Guided math will follow directly after the
math lesson in order for students to apply the
content just learned. The students will use
cooperative learning and teacher assistance
to work through the math problems.
2:30-2:35 Music/Movement We will use this time to dance to music for a
brain break.
2:35-3:05 Math Stations Math Stations allow students to use
cooperative learning to further their
knowledge on past and present math
objectives.
3:05-3:10 Afternoon Meeting During the afternoon meeting we will discuss
our day and what students can practice at
home.
3:10-3:15 Pack Up Pack up time will be used to ensure the
students gather all their belongings that need
to be taken home.
3:15 Dismissal Time to go home!
