Assessment on Medical Waste Management in Public Hospitals in Butuan City

I. Introduction

One of the problems that a lot of hospitals are experiencing right now in Butuan City
is the medical waste management, which is a must be given proper assessment since
it provides health and environmental risk when not properly disposed. Medical waste
disposal is one of the biggest day-to-day challenges faced by healthcare providers.
It’s often complicated by other concerns like HIPAA, epidemiology, potential civil
litigation, and state and local regulation. There are a lot of medical wastes separately
known as sharps, infectious waste, radioactive, non-hazardous or general waste etc.
Poor conduct and inappropriate management or disposal methods executed during
handling and the medical waste disposal is an increasing significant health and
environmental hazards. A lot of hospitals have similar problems with regards to
medical waste management and it should be given distinct solution to avoid and
mitigate harmful outcomes. The common problems about medical waste management
are the lack of knowledge and awareness on proper waste management. Even
domestic helpers are unaware how medical waste can be as harmful as it can be just
due to improper disposal of it.
