IGNEOUS ROCKS

Topic 1: Magma: Nature of Magma

Three components of Magma: Describe the composition of each component
How do these 3 components affect or influence the movement of the
magma and how each component behaves as the magma moves
towards the surface.
Answer the question why is silicon-tetrahedra the building block of silicate
minerals?

Topic 2: a. Describe the process of melting and crystallization. How do minerals melt and how do they
crystallize?
b. Compare and contrast the processes of extrusive igneous rocks and intrusive igneous rocks
c. Describe the six major textures of Igneous Rocks. What does these textures tell about the
cooling history of the rocks?

Topic 3: Discuss the Bowen’s Reaction Series

What is the difference between silicate minerals and non-silicate minerals? When do minerals
form? What is the importance of the Bowen’s reaction series?

Topic 4: Naming of Igneous Rocks

a. Show a chart on the Classification of Igneous Rocks. What are the two major criteria used
in classifying igneous rocks (ans: texture and composition). Do not discuss about the
texture and mineral composition because these will be taken discussed the previous group.

Show instead the similarities and difference of gabbro and basalt, granite and rhyolite,
andesite and diorite etc.

How is texture and mineralogy applied into the classification

Based on the classification table, when can you describe a rock as felsic, intermediate and
mafic.

For this topic, you can actually use one slide only.

Topic 5: Intrusive Activities

a. What is a country rock?
b. What are the different intrusive bodies
- Tabular intrusive bodies
- Massive intrusive bodies

 Describe the different intrusive bodies and how these are formed.

Topic 6: Extrusive Activities

a. Describe the different Extrusive Materials
- Lava
- Gases
- Pyroclastic Materials

b. Anatomy of a Volcano
c. Different types of volcanoes: describe each type of volcano
- shield
- composite
- cinder
