For over 100,000 years humans have lived through a routine of wakefulness during the day and sleep at

night. This routine has been supported through secretion of chemicals which ensured that we remain
wakeful during the day and sleep during the night.

For large part of human evolution, Sun has been the sole source of illumination and later discovery of
fire contributed to creation of artificial illumination. Our body clock has adapted to the lights accordingly
and secreted chemical called melatonin which induced sleep in the dark time.

Over last 100 years, humans are tinkering with this routine of wakefulness and sleep and invention of
electricity has been the major culprit behind this meddling. Electricity enabled artificial illumination
which transformed darkness of night into bright lighted time.

The advent of modern technology and communication has further aggravated this problem through
facilitated interaction between humans living in different time zones. Wakeful state of one person is
forcing other person to change his/her sleep state into activity state.

This transformation is resulting into catastrophic impact on human health and happiness. Activity is
transgressing into sleep time and more and more humans are reporting loss and lack of sleep. This
sleeplessness is causing physical, emotional and psychological problems.

Loss of darkness and over-activity is leading to confused circadian rhythms resulting into less secretion
of melatonin. Further, the activity state leads to release of a chemical adenosine which is responsible for
generating a feeling of tiredness and sleepiness.

Sleep is essential for our health because sleep state allows our body to grow, repair and rejuvenate. A
growing child must sleep for 10-12 hrs to allow growth hormones to function properly. Even an adult
requires minimum 6-8 hrs of sleep to repair and rejuvenate.

This loss of sleep function is beyond compensation. Nature has not created any bypass to sleep and
that’s the reason a person may survive without food and water but cannot remain sleepless beyond a
time. The mind automatically shuts down after a period of activity and sleeplessness.

To restore this essential function of life, it is imperative to connect back with nature and align one’s
lifestyle with the sun cycle. Sun has profound impact on our body functions and disconnection from sun
leads to multiple undesirable changes into body and mind.

For ages, humans have been scared of darkness but now the loss of darkness is leading to loss of sleep.
Darkness is no taboo. Darkness is essential for restoration of body clock and circadian rhythms. Let’s
bring back the darkness so that we can sleep peacefully and live happily!

Will these lifestyle changes lead into genetic adaptation or not, is a question to ponder upon. However
