Important N-S to NE-trending faults separate a westera, mainly Late Cretaceous series (Rio Playas) rom an eastern succession (Catamayo-Gonzanams) of (?) Late Cretaceous to ealy Tey age, “The analysis of these sediments indicates a complex geologic history, whic recorded the main stage ofthe early tectonic evo: lution ofthe Andes In the Rio Playas area, a submarine andesitic volcanic pile (Celica Fm) represents the products of volcanic ac of probably Albian age, Ii apparently overlain bya thick, early Late Cretaceous series of voleanic Hows and coarse-grained volcanclastic high-density turbidtic beds (Alamoe Fn), the deposition of which might result from the Mochica phase (ate Albian-cariy Cenomanian). Deformation, uplift and erosion ealy Peruvian phase) ar followed bythe sedimentation of unconformable matls ‘and greywackes of marine open shelf to deltaic environment. These comprise Santonian and/or Campanian fne- to medium stained deposits (Naranjo Fim), abruptly overlain (lte Peruvian phase”) by fan-dlta coarse-grained marine deposits of atest (Cretaceous age (Casangs Fin). They are locally capped by undated, panly volcaniclasic red beds, indicaling an important regression/uplit of laest Cretaceous-erly Terry age In the Catamayo-Gonzanama area thick subaenal andesite voleanie rocks (Sacapalca Fin) are intruded by Paleocene to early [Eocene plutons and are overlain by undated fluvial red beds. They express uplift’ movements of lalest Cretaceous-crly Tei- ary age. To the South, these ae capped by slumped lacustrine black shales and greywackes of possible Mastictian Paleocene age (Gonzanam Fn). Farber north, the Sacapalca volcanis and red beds are overlain by variegated shales, sandstones and conglomerates, dated a5 latest Oigocone-early Miocene (Colamayo Fm). They are eroded by an angular unconformity and capped by early Miocene volcanics and sediments, which express an early Miocene deformation phase. The apparent semen tary hiatus including most of Bocene Oligocene times is inteproted as & result of the late Paleocene and late Eocene Inca {tectonic phases.
