C RITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

A. INTRODUCTION

Language is an important communication tool used to interact between

individuals. It will be more meaningful if the language is used in daily life by the
speakers. In his narrative, speakers can interpret something delivered by speakers
of other languages with different interpretations. In this case the language users
must understand the contents of the discourse well, so that the message in the
discourse is acceptable and does not cause misinterpretation.

Discourse is a form of written communication in which the author can

express ideas, goals, problems and others. Based on the media the discourse is
divided into oral and written forms. Discourse with written communication media
can be realized by: (1) a text formed by more than one paragraph that expresses
something in a row and intact, (2) a paragraph is a discourse, if the text only
consists of a paragraph it can be considered as a unified situation intact. (3) a
discourse may be formed by a compound sentence with subordination and
coordination or the ellipsis system (Djadasudarma, 1994: 8). So written discourse
can be interpreted as a discourse delivered with written language or written media.
In this discourse there is indirect communication between the writer and the
reader. One of the discourses contained in print media is stickers, which can be
seen everywhere and one of them is on truck trucks.

In the case of stickers, such as stickers on a cargo truck, even though cargo
truck users are not real writers, it can be said that cargo truck users are the
speakers of the stickers, because indirectly the text on the stickers is representing
the user in speaking with the partner who is the reader.

Cargo trucks start to dominate the streets in big cities, for example in the
Suramadu bridge. The interesting thing that can be seen from cargo trucks is the
fondness of the drivers to put stickers on several parts of the truck. Usually, these
stickers are accidentally read when on a red light or when the truck is parked.
When the truck parked in the Suramadu bridge, often stickers affixed in the form

of writing that is unique and attracts attention. In the following, the writer gives an
example of text sticker which find in the suramadu bridge.

Example of text sticker:

Semarang kaline banjir penak sing nyawang timbang sing mikir

(Semarang river floods, good looking from the thinking).

The ideology in this sticker is the reader as critic will result that the sticker
is content about satire that refers to the position of someone who is happy and
difficult. happy position is addressed to someone who likes to only see what other
people are doing without interfering in the work such as just being a spectator and
viewer. while the position is difficult to be addressed to someone involved in the
work such as helping in finding a way out in the problems that involve it. So that
this sticker has a purpose and function to subtly insult someone without having to
argue with each other.

Text sticker is different from other texts. The languages used in stickers
usually contain a lot of ideas from the author and influence the reader to criticize.
By using critical discourse analysis we can find out one's ideology in the text.

Based on these thoughts, the phenomenon of language contained in the

text is very important to study, especially for linguists because the text created is
not merely natural, but contains an underlying ideology. Therefore, one way to
express it is to conduct critical studies. Based on this interest, in this study we will
discuss the ideology in the text stickers contained in the cargo trucks on the
suramadu bridge.

And then from the background of the study presented above, it can be
formulated problems of this research as follows how is the ideology in the text
stickers contained in the cargo truck on the suramadu bridge. Alright, objectives
of the study is explain the ideology in the text stickers contained in the cargo truck
on the suramadu bridge. This study is both theoritical and practical contributions.
Theoritically, this study is an add-on insight into the Critical Discourse Analysis

(CDA) especially ideological critical. Meanwhile, practically this study is

expected to add to one another about language in stickers and to motivate students
to conduct similar research so that they can be further developed. However, the
scope of a study is the focus on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) especially
ideological critical. On the other hand, the limitation of a study is text stickers in
the cargo truck.

B. DISCUSSION

b.1 Theoritical Review

b.1.1 Ideology

According to Friske (2011: 87-92)ideology can be interpreted as beliefs

(views) that belong to a particular class or group, a belief system created (fake)
that is used by the dominant group to dominate the non-dominant group, or the
process of producing meaning (the term used to describe production of meaning).
And hegemony, is the expansion and preservation of ideology without causing
resistance. Hegemony runs if the dominating group is able to create a common
sense that can be accepted the public, especially those who are dominated and
they do not feel, all seem reasonable.

b.1.2 Sticker

Stickers are small sheets of paper or plastic that are affixed; etiquette
(KBBI, 2002: 1091). Paper sheets that have limited space are used by sticker
makers for certain purposes. However, at present, the text sticker is not only used
as a promotional event, but is an idea, information, and certain purposes. For
example: Wis ora usum numpak ninja opo fu sak iki jamane numpak canter 125
ps…gass poll. This text sticker can contain about joke, warning, and suggesting.

As a communication media, stickers are also used as a tool of criticism,

satire, and prohibition on social phenomena that occur in society. Although they
are criticisms or insinuations, stickers can be accepted among the public. Stickers
that are packaged in interesting, intriguing language, but still communicative.

This study is categorized as descriptive qualitative since this study is

aimed to describe the cargo truck stickers in CDA, by classifying them based on
certain theory. Therefore, one of the aims of this study which seeks the possible
analyses the text stickers in cargo truck with CDA and also makes this study uses
qualitative method. Source of data in this study is the cargo truck in the Suramadu
bridge. Data is the text stickers which put on several parts of the truck. The key
instrument of this study is the writer itself. The writer spends a lot of time for
taking picture which have ideology critic. There are step to collect the data such as
searching, taking picture, transcribing, taking notes, and collecting the text sticker
which have ideology critic. In analyzing the data, this study applies theory of
Teun A. van Dijk in CDA.
