Hydraulics in Civil Engineering

Hydraulic engineering consists of the application of fluid mechanics to water

flowing in an isolated environment (pipe, pump) or in an open channel (river, lake,

ocean). Civil engineers are primarily concerned with open channel flow, which is

governed by the interdependent interaction between the water and the channel.

Applications of fluid mechanics in our everyday life are a lot and there are some

which we observe but we didn’t notice. Fluid mechanics is the branch of physics that

studies fluids and forces on them having numerous applications in our everyday life.

The applications include:

- Refrigerators and Air Conditioners

- Air flight

- Sailing

- Pump & motor

- Hydraulic brake system

- Jack

- Waterwheel

- House fan & Turbine

- Hydroelectric dams
