 CATEGORIES OF PERSONAL
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
The first question to be asked when choo-
sing equipment is: what function should
the equipment fulfil?
There are two principal functions:
- preventing the operator from being in a
position from which it is possible to fall:
this is a “fall restraint system”.
- limiting a fall and its impact, should the
situation arise: it is then called a “fall arrest
system”.
The restraint system
This system consists of an anchorage
point, a harness, and usually a single
lanyard to attach them.
The fall arrest system work Fall arrest

equipped with an adjustable work positio-
ning lanyard.

CATEGORIES AND COMPONENTS OF A FALL ARREST SYSTEM

A fall arrest system consists of three indispensable elements

The anchorage point The attachment system

The anchorage point is the point to which the operator is attached.
Its major characteristic is its strength (the standard requires that it
holds more than 10 kN for at least 3 minutes).
The anchorage can be mobile: tripod, sling - or fixed : by means of
horizontal lifelines or anchorage plates. The anchorage point must
however be attached to a support with an equally guaranteed strength.
The attachment system is often required to fulfil several functions :
first and foremost, it must enable the operator to be attached to the
anchorage point in order to limit his movement. Secondly, it must
hold the operator in case of a fall and, finally, it must be able to
break his fall in such a way that the impact on the body is below
6 kN. It is available in various forms: retractable fall arrester, shock
absorber lanyard, rope grab, etc. The choice of system depends on
the context in which it is used and the function it is required to fulfil.

The body wear

Only the complete harness (with shoulder straps and thigh straps) is
Body approved as fall arrest equipment. It has anchorage points to enable
wear the attachment system to be connected, and thus to ensure the
safety of the user. A good harness must be suited to the activity for
which it is intended and offer the user: comfort (nature of straps,
construction), functionality (number and positioning of anchorage
points) and strength (the standard requires that anchorages resist
over 15 kN for at least 3 minutes).

 HOW TO LIMIT RISKS ?

The higher the fall factor, the greater the distance required to arrest
the fall. The fall clearance measurement is therefore essential.
Fall Clearance varies according to the fall factor, and also according
to which fall arrest system is used.

TWO EXTREME EXAMPLES:

Use of a 2 m shock absorber lanyard at fall factor 2.
This is the case in which the Fall Clearance is greatest. You are
therefore recommended to avoid this situation.
Use of a retractable cable Lifeline at fall Factor 0.

in case of a fall, its use in this type of configuration (at the highest point)
is the case necessitating the lowest fall clearance. This is therefore
the ideal situation.

AVOID PREFERABLE

These 2 parameters (Fall Factor and Fall Clearance) will determine the Recommendation:

Blocmax rope grab.
