Philosophy of Nursing Statement

I decided at a young age that when I grew up I was going to a be nurse. In first grade my

cousin Thomas was diagnosed with a rare disease called Neurofibromatosis type 2. This is a

disease that causes multiple benign tumors to grow in the nervous system leading to problems

with hearing, vision, balance, and chronic pain. There is no cure except surgery to remove the

more problematic tumors. Thomas and I are the same age and are extremely close. Growing up I

spent a lot of my time in the hospital with him after surgeries and bringing him his homework

assignments that he missed from school that day. I remember sitting in the hospital room with

him feeling so helpless that I couldn’t take his pain away but when his nurses would come in the

room, immediately I would feel better knowing that he was in good hands and that everything

was going to be okay. The impact his nurses made not only on him, but also me, is what inspired

me to become a nurse at such a young age. To know that one day I could provide patients and

families with same amount of comfort and care that I experienced with my cousin while in the

hospital is dream that I now have the honor of fulfilling.

My compassion for nursing derived from personal experience is what forms the basis of

every action, intent, and motivation involved in my development of becoming a professional

nurse. Nursing is a profession that involves providing care for others physically and emotionally.

Compassion is what is what connects us to our patients emotionally and helps us to better

understand them. Without compassion, the emotional needs of a patient are neglected and the

quality of care provided by a nurse is negatively affected. It is a necessity for nurses to deliver

the highest performance of care with the use of high quality skills, knowledge, and compassion

to meet every need of the patients who are put in their care. My compassion implemented into
my practice as a nurse is my value that enables me give back the same level of quality care that I

had felt by the nurses who cared for my cousin, and inspired me to take on this profession.
