RETHINKING AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR LOW INCOME GROUPS

INTRO & JUSTIFICATION:

The tamilnadu slum clearance board provides housing to slum dwellers and low
income groups to erradicate slums.While the Government is taking efforts to
improve the quality of life for economically concerned section,At some point they
do not deal with their daily issues in housing such as lack of parking spaces,lack of
light and ventilation,Negative spaces between two blocks,Lack of community
space,no chance for future expantion for individual dwellings and no maintainance
and services.Thus the focus of the thesis is to provide better spatial utilization and
better quality of habitat housing than the typical substandard housing provided by
the government.

AIM:
 Create a green affordable housing targeting low-income groups, encouraging
the integration between them and the urban core, in order to avoid getting a
gated community.
 Create a self-efficient community and Exploring and incorporating a
sustainable planning.
 Healthy dwelling, access to light, air, sun,parking,etc.

SCOPE:
• To save money and energy, as it will consider sustainable issues and green
strategies, which reduce the costs.
• Promote more interactive role for residents to do different kind of activities.
• Exploring and developing local construction materials and techniques that can
reduce cost.
 To achieve well space utilization and better quality of habitat.
 To provide spaces for interactive,social,educational,health and recreational
amenities.
