Enabling Objectives

 Define the following terms

- Speed

Speed is the distance travelled divided by time.

Speed

The SI unit is m/s

Velocity is the distance travelled in a given direction divided by time taken.

Velocity

 Carry out an investigation into distance – time graph, calculate the gradient and its speed
- Plot distance - time graph
- Plot speed – time graph

Graphical Analysis of Motion

Distance - time graph (gradient = velocity)

1. Horizontal line means body at rest 2. Straight line with positive gradient mean uniform velocity

Velocity = gradient
Velocity = gradient

= 0 m/s

3. Straight line with negative gradient mean 4. Non-uniform velocity

uniform velocity in the opposite direction

Velocity - time graph

The following deductions can be made from the velocity – time graph

 Gradient of the graph gives the acceleration

 Area below the graph gives the distance travelled

1. Uniform Velocity of 5 m/s for 10s

Acceleration = gradient Distance = area

= 5 x 10

= = 50 m

= 0 m/s2

2. Body moving from rest with uniform acceleration

Acceleration = gradient Distance = area

3. Non-uniform acceleration
