Today most of the protection relays which are being used in substations be

it distribution or Primary substation comply with the requirement of IEC

61850 which defines guidelines for communication networks and systems

in substations.

The most important challenge is to integrate Low voltage circuit breakers

with in substations to IEC 61850. In most cases the circuit breakers

available today do comply with communication protocols like Modbus,

Profibus or Devicement.

We will discuss in the paper possible way of integrating LV circuit breakers

into IEC 61850. This innovative solution provides the user to have complete

substation with IEC61850 protocol. In this paper we will focus more on LV

circuit breakers configuration for IEC 61850, however we will have basic

understanding of IEC61850.

The important criteria which needs to meet IEC 61850 protocol is to

following

¾ GOOSE Messaging

¾ Time stamping

¾ Events and Reports

GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Events) is a method of

transmission of data sets with specified time period.

Time stamping is one of most critical parameter which is required to know

event occurrence. To have effective benefit of time stamping all the devices

are required to share same time base. As a user it is very important to note

that protection devices are required to be selected in such way that they

have time base to obtain event time stamping for analysis. This is even

applicable when the circuit breakers are used with communication

protocols like Modbus, Profibus an
