We serve 850 Students in grades Pre through 8th, Haifton has meaningful and long lasting relationships with many ‘community partners including Hamiton/Lauraville Main Stret Association, Hering Run Nursery, Cty Blossoms (0c), The Nature Conservancy, Walther Gardens, andthe Westfield Neighborhood Association. Hamilton's history of sustainability projects starts approximately ten years ago. At that time, Hamilton lementary/tiddle Schoo! launched an ambitious effort to transform massive asphalt lt into a greenspace that now features two outdoor classroom, a Stree orchard, multiple polinator gardens, large composting area, student run vegetable beds, a shed witha green roof, anda chicken coop. This year we have many new members ‘after sending many of our long-standing members off to high choo! last yen. Each year our Green Club participates annual events, as well as yearspecie projects around our schoolyard. For instance, Green Club ‘members ell schoolyard, and lca farm, grown pumpkins a a fundraler for ur club. Additionally, students have participated again this year in our annual bulb bash during which Green Team members plant afew hundred flower bulbs each fall. What wll you call your school's Sustainability Project? Be creative Know What You Grow 2. Describe your project (please answer all questions} «What wil you do with the funds you are requesting, including steps you wil tke, how you will spend the money, and expected outcomes ofthe project? The goal ofthis projects to transform an under-utiled section of our outdoor learning space into a productive, beautiful, and highly functional space for growing our awn food. Galvanized stack tanks wil be altered int raised arden beds which willbe home to herbs and vegetables that ou students pant, maintain, and harvest throughout the year. The use of gahanized stock tanks will bring al of our garden beds Into a single size standard. This wll alow for our students to crete season-extending design prototypes that wil fal of ou gardens without indvdual alterations being necessary for various width and length gardens. With these student-created add-ons, our garden can grow longer into ‘the fall, and start earlier inthe spring By further defining the garden space witha spiral fence, we will enhance student safety by ‘creating a physical barrier between the greenspace andthe adjacent parking lots and driveway. ‘The fencing wil also provide a new grazing space for our schoolyard chickens to enjoy safely as, well Finally, we wil make repairs to our outdoor classroom chalkboard which has suffered from a slow rot overits 6 years of service. The new design will include avery tiny cedar roof which wll prevent {the rot issue from being repeated. The blackboard isa key component of eur garden classroom, and given its frequent use, ti of great importance that it remains functional, This repair wile se the main 4x supports, while replacing the board its. The outcomes of tis project are to transform a 300 square foot space into a highly functional learning space with new student run raised garden beds, enhanced student safety, and revitalized ‘outdoor assroom Features.
