2. Travel Arrangements to the U.S.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS TO THE US

Airport Arrival Destination:

For this placement, it is recommended that your final airport destination be Tampa International Airport
(TPA) in Tampa, Florida. This airport is approximately 29 minutes (17 miles) away from your placement
housing address.

Do NOT fly into any other airport to save money, because in reality you will not save money and
it is often dangerous and more expensive to try and find “cheaper” ways to get to your final
destination.

Transportation from airport to living address:

After arriving to TPA Tampa International Airport and obtaining your luggage, you will then go to the
Ground Transportation area of the airport terminal to hire a taxi, shuttle, Uber, or Lyft to take you to
your pre-arranged housing address. Here is a link to the airport’s Ground Transportation information:

http://www.tampaairport.com/ground-transportation

(DO NOT CONTACT YOUR EMPLOYER TO PICK YOU UP FROM THE AIRPORT.)

From the airport, you will take a taxi or shuttle and go directly to your pre-arranged housing address,
which will be one of these 2 pre-approved locations:

Housing Name: Overlook at Crosstown Walk Apts. or Crosstown Walk Apts.

Housing Address: 10151 Piedmont Chase Ct 10151 Iris Crosstown Dr
City, State, Zip: Tampa, FL 33619 Tampa, FL 33619

Housing Manager: GEC Housing

Housing Manager Phone: 615-391-2924
Housing Manager Email: GECHousing@gecworkandtravel.com

Special Arrival Information: You must let GEC and your home country agency know the date you will
arrive in the U.S. This must be done at least two weeks before your arrival. If you experience a flight
delay, you must let GEC know in case you will arrive past office hours or in the middle of the night. In
that case, you may have to make alternate housing arrangements for the first night and then check-in
to your housing the next day. Just be prepared and keep all informed.

HOUSING COSTS FOR BOTH HOUSING OPTIONS:

RENT: Your reservation is for the duration of Program.

ALL U.S. properties require that you “pay to stay.” In other words, if you pay by the week, you
will pay rent for that week AT THE BEGINNING OF THAT WEEK.

Occupancy 10 occupants = $138.00 Weekly per person

Occupancy 9 occupants = $153.00 Weekly per person
Occupancy 8 occupants = $172.00 Weekly per person
Occupancy 7 occupants = $192.00 Weekly per person
Occupancy 6 occupants = $230.00 Weekly per person
Occupancy 5 occupants = $276.00 Weekly per person
Occupancy 4 occupants = $345.00 Weekly per person
Occupancy: 3 occupants = $460.00 Weekly per person
Occupancy: 2 occupants = $690.00 Weekly per person
Occupancy: 1 occupant = $1,380.00 Weekly per person

HOUSING COSTS WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE FINAL AMOUNT OF STUDENTS UPON

ARRIVAL.

EXAMPLE: If the final amount of students is 10, all 10 students will pay the price per week for
10 students. If the final amount of students is eight, all eight students will pay the amount in the
table above.

Utility overage charges:

Some housing provides all of your utility costs while others provide utility charges if your electricity, gas,
water, etc. goes over a certain amount: If you go over $250.00, all occupants will be charged $25.00
utility overuse fee.

To whom do you make rental payments? Directly to GEC Housing.

How do you make your rent payments? By bank draft directly to GEC. Within your first week in the
USA, you are required to get an American bank account, acquire a bank debit card, and authorize
GEC to draft your debit card on a monthly basis for the purposes of collecting rent.

Are there late fees if you don’t pay rent on time? Yes, there is a $25.00 charge if your rent is three or
more days late.

Additional occupancy notes:

Hotels and apartments have specific occupancy rules and regulations that are illegal for them to break.
If you break these rules, your hotel and/or apartment complex can ask you to leave. GEC must pre-
approve any housing including moving to another unit/room number BEFORE you move. Your GEC
account must reflect a complete and accurate housing address including room/unit number at all times.

27
PRE-ARRIVAL HOUSING COSTS

Amount of rent you pay before checking into your housing to reserve your place in GEC-arranged
housing: $414.00 will cover three weeks of rent – this amount will cover the first two weeks of rent
and your last week of rent of your housing agreement.

(We provide the max person occupancy figures but if your occupancy is lower, see the table provided
on previous pages- Occupancy is not a choice and will be determined by GEC before your arrival. If
your occupancy is lower, you will be required to pay more.

Refundable Security Deposit: $80.00

Notes on Security Deposit: The security deposit is never the last week of rent and cannot be
substituted for the last week of rent at any housing.

How you are determined eligible for security deposit refund, and method of return: A move out
inspection will take place to determine your eligibility for the return of your security deposit. The house
must be in excellent condition at the time of your departure. All areas must be clean, all personal items
removed and all trash taken out of the residence. If there is a need for a cleaning service or damage
has been done to the house, your security deposit will be used to cover these costs.

GEC does not have the final decision over security deposits returns. The apartment complex has that
decision. If they need to hire a cleaner your security deposit will not be returned.

Non-refundable set-up fee: $150.00 (covers costs such as rental furniture, utilities, cleaning supplies,
administrative fees and application fees): This is a non-refundable fee that will be used to secure your
housing and properly prepare the rental housing for you and your roommates.

Breakdown of costs: We provide rates based on occupancy. We do our best to secure all beds
are full, however, we cannot guarantee it. If your housing is NOT full, you may be expected to pay
more to cover the costs of the rent and utilities. GEC does their best to fill the house and ensure you
are paying the best possible rate for your housing.

PRE-ARRIVAL AMOUNT =
$414.00 Rent
$80.00 Refundable Deposit
$150.00 Set-Up Fee (nonrefundable)
$644.00 TOTAL

To whom do you give your pre-arrival housing payment, and when is it due? Due when you receive
your DS-2019 form and will be collected by your home country agent. If you cancel your program
or are denied a visa, the housing pre-arrival will be refunded 100 percent. You MUST notify GEC 14
days before your program start date to ensure this payment is returned.

Method of pre-arrival payment if not paid directly to home country agent: If you are a direct applicant
and you do NOT have a home country agent, you will pay directly to GEC when you receive your DS-
2019. If you cancel your program or are denied a visa, the housing pre-arrival will be refunded 100
percent. You MUST notify GEC 14 days before your program start date to ensure this payment is
returned.
28
Facts about Security Deposits:

GEC only collects security deposits when the housing we secure for you requires us to do so. The
deposit is submitted to the housing owner or manager. GEC does not keep that deposit. GEC cannot
return the deposit to you until you leave, and the housing manager checks over the property to
determine if the apartment is in good condition. Almost every single student overestimates how clean
they think they leave their housing. If anything at all is left in the housing, including any ring in the
bathtub or spill in the refrigerator, the housing manager will hire a cleaning service. This service fee will
be deducted from your security deposit. Many participants underestimate the damage they do to
carpets, walls, appliances, etc. Any expenses incurred due to damage that must be repaired, carpets
that must be replaced, or any walls that must be cleaned, will come out of the security deposits before

Facts about Rent costs and leases in the USA for our Summer/Spring/Winter Work Travel
participants only:

Most houses and/or apartments prefer a 12 month lease, and the rent is lower for people who take a
12 month lease. However, you will be entering a 3-4 month lease, and U.S. housing increases its rental
costs once the lease terms drop below 12 months. The shorter the lease, the higher the rent. This is
often why our participants may be paying more in rent than their U.S. neighbors. However, our
participants generally do not have to rent their furniture, pay utilities, pay for cable or Internet set-up or
pay for Home owner association fees. Sometimes there are utility overage charges but all costs are
fully disclosed in this Guide.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES AND INFORMATION

About Tampa, FLORIDA:

Tampa is a city on Tampa Bay, along Florida’s Gulf Coast. A major business center, it’s also known for
its museums and other cultural offerings. Busch Gardens is an African-themed amusement park with
thrill rides and animal-viewing areas. The historic Ybor City neighborhood, developed by Cuban and
Spanish cigar-factory workers at the turn of the 20th century, is a dining and nightlife destination.
For residents and visitors alike, there’s no shortage of things to do in Tampa, whether it’s paddling
along the Hillsborough River, sampling tequila at a margarita festival, enjoying a pro football or hockey
game, riding a thrill-coaster at Busch Gardens or attending an opera at the Straz Center.
Tampa is known for being a great city for all ages and tastes, offering hotel accommodations that fit
any budget and catering to everyone from the families to outdoor adventure seekers to foodies and
wine connoisseurs. Once known as a melting pot for all cultures and settlers, Tampa remains a
welcoming place for those seeking fun, opportunity and a chance to try new things.
If you’re into hiking, biking, paddling or bird-watching, hit one of the Tampa area’s many parks and
preserves, such as Hillsborough River State Park in Thonotosassa or Lettuce Lake Park in north
Tampa.
Rent a kayak or stroll the trails among serene surroundings, encountering beautiful Florida birds, pop-
up turtles, lazy gators and the occasional manatee. Bring your fishing gear and a picnic lunch for the
whole family, or spend a romantic afternoon in a canoe for two.

INSECTS, BUGS AND OTHER “CREATURES”:

With the wonderful tropic temperatures in the southern states, you can expect to encounter plenty of
the “creatures” that come along with these climates.

Here is some useful information, taken from an article by Mark Renz, who guides people on day-trips
into the Everglades: http://abfla.com/1tocf/wildlife/pests.html

No-see-ums (pronounced "sure-feel-ums"). They're also known as sand fleas and they can
make a morning or late afternoon at the beach unbearable--especially during the summer
and early fall. They're nearly invisible and instead of stinging you like any decent insect,
they prefer to use your skin as a convenient outhouse. The biting sensation is actually the
acid in their...well, you get the picture. Rub a little Avon-Skin-So-Soft on your skin before
hitting the beach and they should leave you alone.

Mosquitoes. Here in Florida, we call the dance that most unprepared northerners do the
"Smackerena." Summers are the worst, particularly if you decide to visit the Everglades. Don't put on
just any old spray; make sure you have something with a heavy diethyl content, such as Deep Woods
Off or Sportsmen Formula Repel.

Fire ants. They're red and called fire ants for a reason. Their bite is like someone touched your skin
with a lighted match. I've never tried it personally, but some of my old timer friends tell me that if they
do bite you, rub citrus peeling on the spot and it will ease the pain and prevent the sore from bubbling
up like a burn.

Cow ants. Look for a beautiful black and red, velvet-coated ant about 3/4 of an inch long.
You won't find them in a mound and they wander around cow pastures, mostly as loners.
Observe them from a distance and you'll be fine.

Palmetto Bug or Cucaracha (cockroach). They've got to be the ugliest, most despicable-looking
creature alive, but I'm sure their mothers love them. Palmettos appear to be roughly the size of a Buick
- up to two inches for the American cockroach or 5/8 of an inch for the German cockroach, they usually
come out in the middle of the night. Keep all food tightly sealed or locked in the refrigerator to keep
their numbers down.

Wolf Spider. Next to a cat, it's your best defense against cockroaches, other insects, or in-laws who
tend to stay too long. They're big and brown with up to a five-inch leg span, non-poisonous, and patrol
your house at night for other creepy crawlers to munch on. Give them their space.

Love Bugs. These are harmless black flying insects that often fly united, living
for about 24 hours, which is plenty long enough to make a thorough mess of your
windshield. For some reason they are attracted to hot highway pavement.
Tolerance is your best weapon. That and lots of soapy water to keep your car
clean.

57
Stingrays. These flat, kite-shaped creatures love to half-bury themselves in sand in shallow water.
Their tails are long and whip-like, with a poisonous barbed spine near the end. They don't like to be
walked on any more than you do. Wearing shoes doesn't always help. Shuffle your feet while venturing
into the ocean for a swim.

Barracuda. A newcomer to Florida might be unaware that these narrow silver fish with a faces
resembling Sammy Davis Jr.'s enjoy very quick snack on anything sparkly - including an ankle
bracelets. They like to hang out in the shallow water, so leave the jewelry behind while you swim.

Jellyfish. Dead or alive, these clear, balloon-like creatures can be a

problem if you love to swim at the beach. As long as their tentacles are
wet, they can sting, and yet their harpoon-like stingers are so short they
usually can't pass through a t-shirt. Some people apply Avon-Skin-So-
Soft before taking a dip, while others wear thin body suits. If you've been
stung, the type of treatment depends on the type of jellyfish that
committed the offense. Some folks recommend dumping vinegar on the
wounds if they're the result of a jellyfish sting. But for the Portuguese
man-o-war, a cold-pack might do the trick. Your best bet is to describe
the type of jellyfish to a physician and let him or her make the call. The
best way to tell if there are jellyfish in the water is to let your spouse get
wet first.

Geckos. These little 1 - 2 inch salamander-like lizards are actually our allies, because they dine on
mosquitoes and other annoying pests. They scamper around on the walls, on plants - you'll find them
just about anywhere of you look hard enough. Some like to show off a brightly colored neckwear to let
you know they're available.

Alligators. So what if an average adult can reach 14 feet and weigh in excess of 500 pounds. You
were the high school wrestling champion back in 1962 and you're not afraid of anyone or anything.
While a cavalier attitude doesn't go over well with a large alligator, excessive concern may keep you
from enjoying such fine Florida pastimes as canoeing, swimming or fishing. Overall, alligators would
much prefer a tasty foot-long fish to your preservative-filled body. Respect is the key word here. Enjoy
the outdoors but give them as much room as you would an approaching aircraft carrier or a religious
zealot.

Snakes. Florida's got about as many types of snakes as there are letters in the alphabet. And while six
are venomous, consider that--like the alligator--they play more defense than offense. If an area looks
like it might have snakes, it probably does. Be loud, carry a big stick and poke in the tall grass in front
of you as you walk. But again, don't let them keep you from having fun. If you do get bitten, try to
remember what the snake looked like and describe it to your physician for treatment. And don't kill them
just because they scare you. Unlike us, they're an important part of the food chain. More snakes equals
fewer rats. Don't make the same mistakes as those in Washington.

BEACH SAFETY

RIP CURRENTS can be unpredictable, dangerous and deadly!

Please use good judgment while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico.

LOOK FOR:

RIP CURRENTS CAN BE DANGEROUS

Learn how to identify and avoid them:

If you're caught in a Rip Current, don't panic. Swim parallel to the shore until the current
weakens, then swim back to the shore.

Rip currents are strong, localized rivers of water that usually flow away from the beach at a
surprisingly high velocity.

Usually they are associated with large waves and strong offshore winds, but not always!! In
rare cases, rip currents occur during calm conditions.
