My Teaching Philosophy

Growing up I was always told that we live in the state ranking spot number 50 in

education. That always bugged for some reason because I knew I was not going to get the best

education possible. Not saying I was the best student either, but I did and still do care about my

education. I knew that my parents were not able to pay for a private school because aside from

me, they had five other children to feed. However, I always tried my best in every class. I

recently checked on our ranking as a state the other day and somehow, we jumped up to

number 44. Now, I’m not sure if we improved as a state or if other states just worsened.

I honestly just want to make a difference in kid’s lives. I guess I want to find my balance

in the middle of some of the teaching styles out there. I want my students to be aware of their

community, not to live in willing ignorance like I did for many years; which would be considered

the social reconstruction method. However, I want to be a World History teacher. For history, I

would guess that I do have to go about it with the perennialist approach. This approach, I think

will make it easier for me to show students the material using texts from old books. But I don’t

want to limit myself to one teaching style. I would love the best for my students. I want to take

them where they are as individual students and take them to the next level.

I do want to have flexibility but not be considered “laid back”. I want each and every one

of my students to know the material and pass the tests and exams with flying colors. As I try

different teaching styles I want to know what works for me and for my students at the time. I

want to make use of my pedagogy in a fun and creative way. I want to make my classroom a

safe haven, so students are free of judgment and aren’t afraid to ask questions. I want to

interact with my students in a still professional but also personal level. The reason for this is

because the majority of high school students really care about their personal life more than

more than their education. Believe it or not having a teacher like that actually helps students

succeed in their class more, I know because I experienced this first hand.

This is kind of separate but completely related to the topic, but I want to be a

coordinator of an after-school extracurricular activity. This is a huge dream of mine to achieve

because I was in a lot of extracurricular activities growing up and we always had a lot of fun.

Not only is it fun but it is also very helpful to students who need a little extra time, whether

they are struggling in a class, they can come do get torturing and do homework. Or if they are

struggling at home. It can also be a place where students can feel secure and safe while also

learning and keeping their interest. Fundraising and having a field trip planned by the end of

the year so they have something to look forward to. I think this will help not only the students

but also myself, that way I have more time with them to gain their trust more and that way also

gain classroom management. This is where I hope to be in five years

As mentioned before, I want to give students the chance to learn and be free to ask

questions. I want students to have freedom but still maintain order in the class, the way I plan

to do that is by putting in order a discipline system and use it when they are out of line. I really

hope that my students show a lot of improvement during the duration of the class. I want to

make my class tolerable and not a burden to the students’ lives.

I plan to use various teaching utensils, so the students have many chances to learn the

material in different ways. Maybe the student doesn’t learn by just listening, they might need

additional resources such as a handout or a demonstration on the Elmo maybe put together a

slide show and show it on the projector. I don’t want my kids to be sitting down the whole class

period because I know how tedious and tiresome uninteresting that can be. I want to do

stations that switch and at the end they will have their finished assignment. That way it’s not all

just talk and read but it is hands-on and interactive learning. I want to assign group projects

but, in a way, where one person doesn’t end up doing all the work and everyone gets credit for

it. I want to encourage students to learn other things, not to limit themselves to one thing. The

sky is the limit when one really knows their options.

I have been told many times and I now know that I will struggle the first few years of my

teaching career. However, once I find myself in the teaching styles I want to use I am sure I will

love it.
