Conceptual Setting

Integrated Holistic Village Development Program implemented by Navrachna Mahila Vikas Trust and
sponsored by HDFC Bank works in 5 different villages of Borsad Taluka namely: Pamol, Pipli, Valvod,
Dahevan, and Kathana.

Pipli Village lies at distance of 15 km from Borsad. Total Population of the village is 3800 and number
of household is 760. 78% of people are engaged in agriculture and 22% are involved in animal
husbandry. SHG’s have been set up under the Integrated Rural Development Program by Navrachna
Mahila Vikas Trust in Pipli so that women can save their money and use their savings for personal
need. In Pipli village, the organization is working with 7 SHGs in total. Since land holding is minimum
and there is no other earning source in the village, there was a need for new source of income activity
which will be fulfilled by providing fishing pond in the village.

Intervention

Most of the people are into agriculture and livestock. Hence, women of the SHG wanted IG activities
which can be done easily and have knowledge about it. During meeting with the staff members of
Navrachna Mahila Vikas Trust, they were informed and guided about the fisheries industries and how
it is beneficiary for the income generation of the society and set up was to be done looking to their
need and easy accessibility. Fishing pond is highly profitable and requires less capital and investment.

Noorani Matru Mandal was the group selected as a beneficiary group


and Riyazbhai Saiyed was selected to take care of the fishing pond. The
group consists of 10 members.
The SHG have been given timely consultations by the staff of NMVT and
are supported in running their livelihood. SHG group was given
information about fishing pond by the staff and adequate training was
given on how to develop and sustain the pond.
Beneficiary Detail
The group consists of 10 members. The source of income for these members is through cultivation of
land they own and through livestock. They cultivate paddy, cotton and wheat on their farm. It is not
enough for their sustenance and there is no other earning source for them.

Process

 SHG meeting with the women and identified beneficiaries based on the economic status and
wants to develop such kitchen garden.
 Document collection Photo ID Proof, Voter ID, Aadhar Card, Banks details of the
Beneficiaries/group.
 An application for assistance from the Beneficiaries/group and Consent Letter from PRI/VDC
taken.
 Contribution Collection in Cheque/DD/CASH from the Beneficiaries/group.
 Invite for 3 quotations from traders /Agents /Agency and finalized the vendor and Purchase
done accordingly.
 Selection of a care taker of the fishing pond and agreement with him for development of the
pond.
 A packet of seeds was hand over to the beneficiaries and Agreement with beneficiaries for
taking care and development of the pond.

Benefits of the Intervention

This initiative helped in increase of income for the group and provided an additional income source to
their family. Group members are also able to create a healthy environment for their children by
providing them fish since it is enriched with nutrition
elements. Selling these fish in the market will also
increase and have an additional income for their family.

Market price of fish is RS 100 per kilogram and an


average of 8000 fish is produced at the end of one cycle.
Thus in a month, approximately 20000 kg will be
produced and selling them, they can earn around RS
2000000 at the end of a cycle. This initiative has helped
to improve their standard of living as well due to
financial stability.
