A) Do the following questions in your assignment sheets:
1.) Using Huygen’s principle, describe briefly how a diffraction pattern is obtained on a screen due to a single narrow slit illuminated by a monochromatic source of light. Hence obtain the conditions for the angular width of secondary maxima and secondary minima. Also show that the central maximum is twice as wide as the secondary maximum. 2.) Write five points of difference between interference and diffraction of light. 3.) The figure shows a modified Young’s double slit experimental set –up. Here SS2 – SS1= λ/4. (a) write the condition for constructive interference. (b) obtain an expression for the fringe width. 4.) Do the following numericals from your NCERT book: Q 9.17, Q 9.20 (Page 347) and Q10.6, Q 10.7 (Page 383) and 9.38(Page 350) B) Complete the activity copy by writing 5 activities (2 from section A and 3 from section B) from your practical book. The activity copy should be a separate practical copy. The activities are as follows: 1) Section A: a) To assemble a household circuit comprising of three bulbs, three (on/off) switches, fuse and a power source. b) To study the variation in potential drop with length of a wire for a steady current. 2) Section B: a) To identify a diode, an LED, a transistor, an IC, a resistor and a capacitor from mixed collection of such items. b) To observe polarization of light using two Polaroid. c) To observe diffraction of light due to a thin slit. C) Prepare well for your test .The syllabus of the test is: (i) Ray optics (ii) wave optics and (iii) Electrostatics till forces between multiple charges: superposition principle and continuous charge distribution.
