Solid Waste Management of the Philippines

and how to improve it

Every City here in our country have a dedicated land for a landfill but it has only 2 %

dedicated for it. And as time progresses some of these landfills are full. Base on a survey a

billion of pesos is spent for garbage collection every year and billions of it will be saved if every

people in this country are active in recycling and composting garbage wastes. It appears to be a

big percentage of cost can be saved. In fact, a big percentage of these garbage can be recycled

and composted and only a small percentage that can’t be used or residual. One of the simple

ways to solve these deteriorating problems that this country faced is to follow the “Republic Act

No. 9003” or the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, where here it is declared the right

way to dispose and recycle these garbage wastes. This garbage is classified into biodegradable,

recyclable, residual, and toxic waste. Biodegradable are that garbage that can be decomposed,

examples: peel of fruits and vegetables, leftover foods, leaves, animal stool, and etc.

Recyclables are those materials that can be recycled, examples: paper, cardboard, metal, tin

can, bottles, plastic, and etc. We can make money of these materials where we can sell it in the

junk shops. For residual waste, ceramic materials that can’t be used anymore is one of its

examples such as broken plates, glass, etc. Toxic wastes are those wastes that are hazardous in

human health if neglected. Example of these are wastes that comes from the hospitals and

factories.
So, why we Filipinos can’t follow these ways to solve these problems that we faced in

solid waste disposal? For me, majority of the people in our country are not educated about

solid waste management that’s why even there is a law that is implemented many of us still

can’t follow. Especially in the community that are near in the river, lakes, etc., where there

they’re wastes are thrown. For me, education is the key to solve these problems. If majority of

us are educated about solid waste management we will not face this problem.
