ME 100 Thermodynamics Deadline: October 30, 2019

Problem Set: Chapter 3: Evaluating Properties

Instruction: Write your detailed solution and answers on a long bond paper.

1. Determine the phase or phases in a system consisting of H2O at the following conditions and
sketch P–v and T–v diagrams showing the location of each state. PROVE YOUR
ANSWER. Note: There will be 2 diagrams only: one for P–v and one for T–v.
(a) P = 100 lbf/in.2, T = 327.86 °F. (Answer: saturation region, saturated liquid-vapour
mixture)
(b) P = 100 lbf/in.2, T = 240 °F. (do the same procedure with (a))
(c) T = 212 °F , P = 10 lbf/in.2
(d) T = 70 °F, P = 20 lbf/in.2
(e)P = 14.7 lbf/in.2, T = 20 °F.

2. For H2O, determine the specified property at the indicated state. Locate the state on a sketch
of the T–v diagram.
(a) T = 140 °C, v = 0.5 m3/kg. Find T, in °C. (Refer to Table A-2)
(b) P = 30 MPa, T = 100 °C. Find v, in m3/kg. (Refer to Table A-4)
(c) P = 10 MPa, T = 485 °C. Find v, in m3/kg. (v = 0.31893 m3/kg)
(d) T = 80 °C, x = 0.75. Find P, in bar, and v, in m3/kg. (For P, refer to Table A-2;
v = 2.6185 m3/kg)

3. Four kg of water is placed in an enclosed volume of 1m3. Heat is added until the temperature
is 150°C. Find
(a) the pressure, (use the Table for saturated water-temperature)
(b) the mass of vapor, and (m = 2.544 kg)
(c) the volume of the vapor. (V= 0.998 m3)

4. A piston-cylinder device contains 0.1 m3 of liquid water and 9.0 m3 of water vapor in
equilibrium at 800 kPa. Heat is transferred at constant pressure until the temperature reaches
350°C.
a. What is the initial temperature of the water? (use the Table for saturated water-
pressure)
b. Determine the total mass of the water, (m=93.43 kg)
c. Calculate the final volume, and (V2 = 33.08 m3)
d. Show the process on a P-v diagram with respect to saturation lines. (plot the diagram)

5. For a specific volume of 0.2 m3/kg, find the quality of steam if the absolute pressure is
(a) 40 kPa and (x = 0.4996 ; T =155°C)
(b) 630 kPa. (x = 0.6534 ; T = 166°C)
What is the temperature of each case?

6. Water is contained in a rigid vessel of 5 m3 at a quality of 0.8 and a pressure of 2 MPa. If the
a pressure is reduced to 400 kPa by cooling the vessel, find the final mass of vapor mg and
mass of liquid mf. (10.72 kg and 2.68 kg)
7. The pressure in an automobile tire depends on the temperature of the air in the tire. When the
air temperature is at 25 °C, the pressure gauge reads 210 kPa. If the volume of the tire is
0.025 m3, determine the pressure rise in the tire when the air temperature in the tire rises to
50 °C. Also determine the amount of air that must be bled off to restore pressure to its
original value at this temperature. Assume the atmospheric pressure to be 100 kPa. (26 kPa,
0.007 kg)

8. A 1-m3 tank containing air at 25°C and 500 kPa is connected through a valve to another tank
containing 5 kg of air at 35°C and 200 kPa. Now the valve is opened, and the entire system is
allowed to reach thermal equilibrium with the surroundings, which are at 20°C. Determine
the volume of the second tank and the final equilibrium pressure of air. (2.21 m3, 284.1 kPa)

9. A 1 m3 rigid tank has propane at 100 kPa, 300 K and connected by a valve to another tank of
0.5 m3 with propane at 250 kPa, 400 K. The valve is opened and the two tanks come to a
uniform state at 325 K. What is the final pressure? (139.9 kPa)

10. Draw the “Property Diagram” indicating the different points/regions/lines.
