ISTC 301PTE Lesson Format

Name: Anna Lynch & Ashley Funes Grade Level: 5th Grade

Date lesson is taught: 12/05 Time Scheduled: 1:25- 1:45

PRE-TEACHING
Justification
This section of the planning process helps you think through why this lesson is necessary. It is
the data that supports your purpose for the lesson. Each section in bold below needs to be fully
answered. It contains the following:

1) Pre-assessment:
In order to evaluate what students already know, we will use Edulastic to test the students’ prior
knowledge. The pretest will consist of 5 questions involving; adding, subtracting, exponents,
division, and multiplication.
2) Purpose and relevance:
We are using the pretest in order to assess the students’ prior knowledge on adding,
subtracting, multiplying, dividing numbers and simplifying exponents in order to build the basis
for Order of Operations and understanding parentheses. It is important for students to
understand parentheses because they will be using them in their future math careers.

3) Objectives:
After this lesson, the student will be able to:
● Follow order of operations correctly
● Use parentheses and solve equations that involve parentheses

4) Common Core Alignment:

CCSS.MATHCONTENT.5.OA.A.1: Use parenthese, brackets, or braces in numerical
expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.

CCSS.MATHCONTENT.5.OA.A.2: Write simple expressions that record calculations with

numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them.

5) Technology Standards Alignment:

● 1a. Creativity and Innovation: Students should be able to apply existing knowledge; of
adding, subtracting, exponents, division, and multiplication, to solve order of operations.
● 3d. Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems that
require to use order of operations of which will cause students to develop ideas and
theories and pursuing answers and solutions.
● 4c. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: Collect and analyze data to
identify solutions and/or make informed decisions on essential problem given so that the
student is able to solve for the right amount.
● 4d. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: Use multiple processes
and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions when solving order of
operations and equations that involve parentheses.

6) Post-Assessment:
We will use SurveyMonkey to test the students on what they learned. Students who either had
trouble with the lesson or are afraid of getting an answer wrong and someone being able to see
that they got an answer wrong will feel better taking this survey because it is anonymous. If a
majority of the class gets one of the questions wrong, then we as teachers will be able to see
where we need to make adjustments in our lesson plan and where students need more help
understanding the concepts.

LESSON PLANNING
Think about the following considerations as you plan instruction to better meet the needs of all
learners.

Instructional Materials:
- Students need to have access to a technological device Preferably a computer
- Students should have Pencil and paper
- SmartBoard
- Phone (teacher)

Teacher Preparation and Resources:

- Should have equations prepared with detailed answers
- Give any definitions or have dos and don'ts so that students have enough resources to
come up with their own definitions
- Different methods of representation for students who learn in diverse methods

Media and Technology:

We will be using Edulastic, SurveyMonkey, and ABCYA.com
https://www.abcya.com/games/order_of_operations

Differentiation:
Information will be presented on the slides for students who are better visual learners and
students who learn better when they read. Information will be spoken for auditory learners.
Students will be able to interact with the board and game. This can help students who are very
hands-on learners.

Adaptations for students with special needs:

If we had student(s) with special needs, we can give them more time processing the questions
for the pre and post test. We would also increase the font size for students with reading and
seeing problems or students who have vision problems could perform the class activity on their
own computer in order to understand how their peers are completing the activity.

Multicultural and Diverse Perspectives:

● If there happens to be a student who is not able to speak english then they should
receive instructions, worksheets and etc… in English and in their native language so that
they are able to participate.

Possible Modification of Plans:

If the lesson exceeds the timeframe, then we do not have to do the game with the students.
They can just do the example problems with us and then take the post test. If the lesson takes
less time than expected, students can be given a worksheet that will help them with order of
operations. If the teacher is absent that day, the sub would give students a work packet that
defines PEMDAS, gives written out examples, and then includes a multitude of problems for
students to practice.

During Teaching
Procedures:
These are the sequential steps you design to scaffold the students’ understanding of the skills
or concepts necessary to achieve the objectives.

Introduction:
· How will you assess students’ prior knowledge? (pre-assessment)
· How will you motivate the students to be engaged in the lesson? (enthusiasm)
· How will you get their attention? (classroom management techniques)

Describe the sequence of your lesson: this should involve not only what you will do, but also
what the students will do.

are going to have you guys take a short

Students will now take the pretest and

use the plicker cards to answer each

After taking the pretest there would be a

the instructor is able to see what
students know and don't know where to

After assessing the results we begin
