AREA OF RESEARCH - IDENTIFICATION OF A NEW MODEL OF MOTIVATION BASED ON

EVALUATION OF MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

LITERATURE REVIEW

Employee motivation is one of the key indicators of a company's performance. There have been several
theories in this area. Maslow (MASLOW, 1943) spoke about 5 types of needs that operate in a hierarchy.
He mentioned that these needs are satisfied from bottom to top. However, it has also been stated that
the hierarchy is not rigid and different people may have different orders of needs.Sometimes all needs
operate simultaneously within an individual. For example, a person may be hungry and at the same time
need love and affection. (Tripathi & Reddy). This view is also corroborated by Saul Mc Leod in his paper
that states that many cultures having poverty have produced exceptional talents who went for
satisfaction of higher needs rather than fulfilment of basic physiological needs.
(http://highgatecounselling.org.uk/members/certificate/CT2%20Paper%201.pdf) . Beahm spoke about
Steve Jobs who during his address to Stanford students asked them to stay Hungry which was more an
expression towards self- actualization than satisfaction of physical needs (Beahm).

This paper aims to examine the relevance of Maslow's theory in the context of SAIL

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Indirect structured questions

A sample size of 26 employees was taken and administered a questionnaire wherein they had to give an
option from 1 to 5, 1 being strongly disagree and 5 being strongly agree.

ANALYSIS OF RESULT
Given below is how the paricipants responses to the questionnaire.

CONCLUSION

As per the study undertaken, employees seem to mostly agree that SAIL is taking care of the safety
needs and basic needs of the employees. A substantial percentage of employees also agrees that their
work is recognized by the company. Recognition also emerged as the most important factor in employee
motivation. Second most important factor that motivates employees is salary increase.

Based on this study, the HR department of SAIL can design incentive programmes based on the various
factors affecting employee motivation. For example, recognizing employees' contribution through
schemes like ' Employee of the month/quarter/year' or through simple initiatives like applauding their
effort in daily morning meeting can go a long way in enhancing the employee's performance and the
company as a whole.
